Potting Bench Cost

How Much Does a Potting Bench Cost?

low costLow: $50-$250average costMedium: $200-$600high costHigh: $500-$1,200+

A potting bench or table is a specialized work area designed for gardening tasks like potting plants or transplanting seedlings. It should have a work surface that is high enough to be comfortable to use when standing (typically about waist high). Many models provide storage for gardening tools, pots and potting soil. Some potting benches are placed inside a greenhouse or potting shed, but most are kept outdoors and need to be made of weather-resistant materials, such as cedar wood, vinyl or metal.

Typical costs:

  • A basic potting bench can cost $50-$250, depending on size and materials. These are usually simple set-ups with a work area, one bottom shelf and perhaps a small overhead shelf. Potting benches in this price range tend to be made from less expensive wood, galvanized metal or plastic. For example, the Poly-Tex Galvanized Steel Potting Bench is 44" high, 24" deep and 44" wide, with a work space and small upper shelf, and sells for $118-$149.
  • A mid-range potting bench with more surface and storage space, and typically made with better quality materials (often cedar wood), can cost $200-$600, depending on size, style, materials and the number of shelves, drawers or other options such as a removable soil box or bucket. For example, NeatItems.com offers a large (58.5" tall, 23" deep and 58" wide) Master Gardener's Potting Bench hand-crafted in cedar with two 10" deep top shelves, a 3.5-gallon bucket, a drawer and a towel bar for $369-$403.
  • Large, efficient and decorative potting benches with lots of drawers, shelves and other gardener-friendly options (like an outdoor sink), and made with high-quality wood can cost $500-$1,200 or more, depending on size and materials. For example, Eli's Potting Bench[1] from Forever Redwood is 42" long, 21' deep and 64" high, with a parquet wood tabletop, two drawers and two shelves. It can be made using Douglas fir ($910), Redwood ($985), mature redwood ($1,185) or old-growth redwood ($1,515). Possible options include copper drawer inserts ($85-$150), casters ($79), premium sealant for outdoor use ($30) and custom engraving ($30).

What should be included:
  • Many potting benches will need to be assembled by the consumer, but this can range from tightening a few bolts to a major DIY project. If possible, read the assembly instructions before purchasing.
Additional costs:
  • Some companies offer free shipping. Others may charge $10-$100 or more, depending on size, weight and distance.
Discounts:
  • It's possible to build a potting bench for the cost of lumber and hardware, with the total cost depending on the size and scope of the potting bench, the quality of the wood chosen and the amount of materials (such as scrap lumber) already on hand. FamilyHandyman.com estimates it can take $100-$500 and one to two days to build a cedar potting bench[2] ; Better Homes & Gardens posts instructions for building a small portable (wheeled) potting bench; HGTV.com describes making a potting bench using recycled materials such as an old wood gate; Lowe's posts detailed plans for a large potting bench[3] ; and BluegrassGardens.com has links to free potting bench plans[4] .
Shopping for a potting bench:
  • The height of the work space, stability, durability (especially if used outdoors) and efficiency (amount of storage and work space) are all important factors in choosing a potting bench. List the tasks that will be performed at the bench, and the tools and supplies needed. Make sure the main work space is a comfortable height to work when standing at the bench, and consider how much space is available for the potting bench. BakyardsAndGardens.com outlines options to consider[5] when selecting a potting bench.
  • Basic potting benches are typically available at big box stores, hardware stores and home improvement centers like Target[6] , Ace Hardware[7] and Home Depot[8] . They're also available from online retailers like Amazon [9] , eBay[10] , and PottingBenches.com[11] .
