My husband locked himself out of his car. Unfortunately, he had the only remaining set of keys to the car. This was the first time we've ever needed a locksmith. I researched via the internet and called around. No one was willing to give me a quote. Everyone told me about their one time service fee to drive out to where the car was and the additional starting fee but they also told me that the price goes up from there. Apparently, there was no maximum and the price depended on the difficulty of opening the lock, the alarm and the make and model of the car. I know the make and model of my car. I would think a trained expert, based on the make and model of my vehicle, would also be able to give me a pretty good estimate as to how much it would cost and how long it would take to unlock my car. As it stands now, I've been looking for a locksmith for an hour and a half and no luck.

There are so many horror stories here. I'm a locksmith in San Francisco I am a second generation locksmith. We have been in business here in San Francisco since 1961 we have a flat rate that we charge to come out and we do not charge extra to pick locks open. If we have to drill, it's only because we have been trying to pick the lock for at least 45 minutes to an hour drilling is being defeated and we don't like to be defeated we like to do our job. There are other locksmiths like myself in every city around the country the problem is when you are locked out and you are stressed and you need to get in and it's the middle of the night it's hard to shop around. However if you have a chance to when you need a locksmith you can find the ones that will not rip you off and maybe even make you think that it was helpful and you come away feeling okay.

I lost my mailbox key and tried to get the post office to assist. They did not cover for my area.
Condo association also stated it was up to me to get a locksmith. Called one and he told me $100.
Thought this was high. Online was quoted $15 service and $30 -$40 for lock and labor. Truth I was charged $179. and I reacted in shock. He lowered it to $145 Felt cornered and went with it. Get a firm quote. labor, install, drill out,key and tax don't be fooled!

Locksmith bait and switch
Amount: $204.00
Posted by: Sandra Dee in Studio, CA.Posted: June 30th, 2015 06:06PM
Type of Service: Lock outNumber of Locks: 1
I was locked out, so my neighbor googled locksmiths in my area and came across a company called United Locksmiths that had a 24hour service and arrival time 15 min. It was advertised as a service call for $15 and a starting price of $35. I thought it would be about $50. I clarified that it would be $35 and he said yes. While he was trying to pick it, he said that he would have to use an air pump, which is like a blood pressure pump. It took all of 20min. When he was done, he wrote up the bill and said it would be $244. I was shocked, I argued with him that it was a bait and switch. That was not what was advertised. He said there were all these fees. None of that is mentioned on site or in any conversation. I told him it was a scam and I wasn't happy. He told me he would lock the door again and I could call someone else. He then showed me receipts of the day from other customers(he had ripped off).

I used to work for one of these scamsmiths.I quit and opened my own shop. Not always can we give a price over the phone because we dont know what were up against. Its hard to make a key for a car with a screwdriver broken off in the switch.A real locksmith will ask a few questions about most jobs before we even take a job.most jobs should be the price quoted never more but sometimes people dont give all the true details.Be ware of service call+ labor thats where they get you.

Worst, dishonest, crafty person I ever met!
As everyone said, they quoted me $50 minimum for service fee, well we know it would be higher than that. And that jerk finally charged me $250 for it. Well, he probably thought I was a teenager, so he tried to get more from me. So i suggest you DO NOT ask help from this DECEIVING organization! Worst service ever!

job is as quoted that's simple, if it takes longer to write the invoice think how did I get MYSELF into this situation? Maybe this bloke did his apprenticeship and now has a trade. You don't pay me as quoted its 2 letters then small clams court. If you call at night time expect to get slogged for price, but if a bloke comes round and at a glance says lets drill this and I want more money you have a choice to accept or reject the new quote. Some HOUSE locks only do need to be drilled due to H top pins or restrict keying with shitty profiles or just a horrible bitting. I have not nor do I know anyone anywhere who has drilled a car lock. Don't be fooled by thinking a clown with a drill is a locksmith

Locked out of apt.
Amount: $280.00
Posted by: Cherie in Middle Island, NY.Posted: February 13th, 2015 01:02PM
Type of Service: Drill and replaceNumber of Locks: One
The locksmith tried to use a piece of plastic and sprayed oil to open. That didn't work so he had to drill and destroy lock. So now a replacement lock in door handle.
If I used a credit card there was a $55 surcharge so luckily my neighbor had cash. He supposedly was not charging for the lock which would have been $125 for the lock so if I gave him $30 cash he'd replace the lock with two keys.
On top of that the company I called was Allstate Locksmith but on the invoice (that I had to ask for) the name is New York Locksmith Networks Inc.
I felt I was ripped off but I had my mother (82 years old) that had a doctors appt and then physical therapy,) in a neighbors car so he knew I was ripe for the picking.
After coming home and retreading the invoice and then these comments, I am now sure I was ripped off!
This happened today February 13, 2015 but below doesn't give 2015 as a choice.

key made
Amount: $30.00
Posted by: Ann Morris in Orange Park, FL.Posted: February 8th, 2015 10:02AM
Type of Service: HOUSE CALLNumber of Locks: 1
I wanted A key made for my garage door because I did not have one. A TECH CAME TO THE HOUSE TO TELL ME THE LOCK WAS TOO OLD. HE WOULD HAVE TO TAKE IT TO THE SHOP AND IT COULD COST BETWEEN $100-$200 TO MAKE A KEY.I told him to forget it. But on the phone I was told it could be done on site for about $45.00. What a rip off so I paid $30.00 for nothing. You can make a lot of easy money that way show up and can't do the work and collect $30.00. Florida is the worst state to get people to do work. I have had a lot of bad experiences with workers trying to rip me off. A plumber wanted to replace my toilet at a cost of $300.00 because he didn't know what was wrong. I told him to forget and fixed it myself for $15.00. I replaced a gasket.

Cost of Locksmith Service

We are a family locksmith service in business since 1978. We have flat rates. A lockout in our town is a $70 service call and then $25 for the lockout. If it only takes a short time, it's because it took my husband 30 years to learn his trade and he's good at it. Please look at the Association Locksmiths of America and your state association to find reputable locksmiths. We are also hurt by the fly-by-night guys.

Quoted 15 for visit, 29.99 for labor and he got here quick enough. Fiddled with door for 10 seconds then said I will have to do it this way. so he slide in screw driver no pick or drill and said 165.00? I just about hit the roof but I paid! I then called back to ask for license and bonding information as the website said licensed and bonded. I was told I have to call back tomorrow. Tried to call back to get address and the message said that "this number can not be reached from your area"? So I called the 888 number got "mail box is full". I tried to contact using links on the websites but they were blank emails no address. Upon calling Mr. 24/7 FL, I was told I would have to call back the first number from a different phone. I emailed BBB and called my bank ASAP. I just paid you and you block me? numbers don't work? Stopped payment and filled complaint all within a an hour. They got 20 cash and 64 on a check. but not the 80 credit card and my bank is aware of these companies.12/15
