Patio doors are typically installed as a doorway from a kitchen or family room to a patio or other outdoor area. They include a great deal of glass for a light and airy look, and come in a wide variety of styles -- single, double, sliding (gliding), hinged (swinging), French and more. Sliding doors are more modern-looking, and take up less space than in-swinging French-style double doors, which have a classic look and create a wide central opening when both doors are open.

Typical costs:
  • Door prices vary far more than for most home improvement purchases, and consumers may be quoted widely different prices for the same brand and model door from different retailers.
  • Sliding glass doors (typically one fixed panel, one sliding; sometimes called gliding or bypass doors) typically cost $300-$800 for a basic 5'-6' wide set, or $600 -$2,000 with installation.
  • Prices start at about $300-$800 for a standard set of French doors (typically two doors that open to the center for a wide opening, with columns of small windows the full length of the doors), or $600-$1,200 with installation. However, expect to pay $1,000 -$3,000 or more for a set of mid-range to high-end French doors that are more durable, stylish and/or energy-efficient. With installation they cost $1,500 -$4,500 or more, depending on the age of the house, type of exterior and walls, and the complexity of the project.
  • A hinged patio door (typically with a single large pane of glass, or French-style with an overlay creating the look of multiple panes of glass) starts at about $400 -$900 but can cost $1,000 -$4,000 or more depending on size, materials, style and options like built-in blinds, more energy-efficient glass or side panels of fixed glass, For example, the Andersen 200 Series Hinged Inswing Patio Door costs about $840 in a single-panel configuration. Installation can bring the total cost to $1,000 -$5,500 or more.
  • Expect costs to double for impact-resistant patio doors (sliding, French-style or single hinged) that can withstand hurricane-force winds. Mike Davidson Construction in Florida estimates that installing a 9' impact-resistant sliding glass door costs about $3,700, compared to $1,800 for tempered glass.
What should be included:
  • Lowe's discusses the basic principles for installing preassembled patio doors. Professional installation typically takes up to a day or sometimes two, and the project can be done in a weekend by an experienced do-it-yourselfer with excellent carpentry skills, according to HomeTips.com.
Additional costs:
  • If the flooring, siding, deck or interior trim surrounding the existing door needs has water damage, dry rot or other problems, or the opening is uneven because the house has settled, repairs can add $50 -$1,000 or more to the total cost, depending on the extent of the damage.
  • If not included, screen doors can cost an extra $35 -$1,100 or more, depending on size, style and quality of materials.
  • Simple patio door locks and/or handles start at about $2-$25, but can cost $30-$300 or more, depending on style, materials and the level of security provided. For example, Amazon sells a simple Slide-Co 15611 Patio Door Lock that fits into a sliding door track for about $3 -$3.50; Lowe's charges about $20 -$25 for the Prime-Line Black Mortise Lock-Style Patio Door Handle; and the Baldwin 8591 / 8596 Double Cylinder Sliding Door Lock costs $250 -$263.
Shopping for a patio door:
  • Sealing and factory-installed weather stripping are important in hot or cold climates, and thermal insulation is an asset in areas with harsh winters. HomeAdditionPlus.com lists factor to consider when selecting patio doors. It's also important that the doors fit in visually; TheHouseDesigners.com lists design tips for getting the most from patio doors.
  • All styles of patio doors are available from home improvement centers like Home Depot or Lowe's, and often good deals are available through small local lumberyards. Or search for a local door and window dealer through the American Window and Door Institute.
  • Accurate installation estimates can only be done on-site, as measurements need to be precise and the condition of the existing frame and surrounding wall needs to be evaluated. If hiring an installer, verify that the company is properly insured, bonded and licensed; ask for and check references, and look for any complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau.
