Painter quoted $4,000. for front foyer (about 15' by 20'). It is a two story foyer. Also included-20 stairs to upstairs and then about a normal hallway (about 20' by 3' and a little dummy landing area attached to it). He quoted the $4,000. to remove all the wallpaper and paint-includes stairway and bannister. Turns out the old wallpaper was put up without sizing so he will paint over everything. Now says will cost and additional $500 to bring total to at least $4,500. (Our whole house is only 3,000 sfeet by the way-so we're not talking a grand foyer and hallway.) I thought removing the wallpaper should cost more than patching over it to prep for paint. What does anyone think? |

It cost us $45 a gallon for really good paint. (needed two gallons)Duration Sherwin Williams to be exact. I paid $15.00 for painters tape to do the edging, and $5.00 for enough drop cloths for the room. I paid $8 for a brush cover, and $4.00 for the roller itself, $15 for an extender wand if you need one.
It takes about 4 hours to do one coat with the edging included. |

Yes it sounds like he's taking too long. A house that size should take no longer than 2 weeks for one person. |

Price is 3700 plus paint for a 2000 sqft house, to include walls, ceilings, and all trim/windows/doors. We recieved quotes ranging from 3700 to over 9000, but honestly did feel the guy with the lowest quote was the best fit... and not solely based on price. We knew it would take a while and we are flexible on our move-in date so we were/are being pretty laid back as far as "managing" the process. It's been almost a month and three bedrooms upstairs are almost done, the bathroom is not and downstairs has only had the ceilings done and wallpaper removed from one room. At this rate it will take him another 2 months to finish the job. We have paid him most of the fee so I'm getting a little nervous. He had really good reviews from a trusted source, but my confidence is wavering. As a first time homebuyer, I'm just waiting for the nightmares to begin! Is this too long? I really want to be fair! |

Went to Lowes and bought a roller/pan combo, a $2 brush, a roll of tape and three gallons of paint. From the prices I seen on this site, I must be extremely gifted because my attic looks great from a days worth of work. Maybe I should switch careers and become a handyman? Nah, I think I'll just quit reading stuff on the internet. |

This estimate was for a long time client. This is their new home (they downsized to a 2500 sf). Occupied. Complete color change 2 coats on all walls, ceilings, closets, 2 car garage, trim and doors(21) including various accent colors. This price includes paint(valspar signature $33/gal)They think its too high so they are going to shop for a better price. I have discounted as much as I can for this loyal customer, but, I'm afraid I lost them. just sickening |

you should have a nation wide survey for paint contractors. What would they charge to paint a 12' X 12' room. walls and ceiling, 2 - 6 over 6 windows, 1 - 6 panel door, base molding. Two coats on ceiling, walls and trim.I would love to see the range of prices that come in. Every paint contractor has fixed costs. Workers comp insurance, liability insurance, Truck insurance, Possible Truck payment, sales tax on labor. cost of materials, the only variable should be your hourly rate. or what the market will bare. |

I gave this family a quote of $1,800 to prep , prime and paint their front foyer up the stairway , down a long hallway about 30 feet and down the back stairway. The job consist of 3 colors and they want the stair risers , spindles , waynescott , chair rail , base board , crown molding , walls , doors and all the trim in these areas painted . I think that was a very reasonable price . What do you think ? |

I love when people post online about work they have had done and ask did I pay too much. Maybe you should have done the work yourself since you obviously didn't want to pay to have it done. I can stack your house with illegals and charge you $5 for the job, is that worth it? I also love painting contractors who post here about how they never charge for colors ...... Blah, blah, blah. I gues you live pretty well off on $12000 a year but the rest of us who pay taxes, insurance, and equipment maintenance get screwed by people like you. |

pricing varies due to grades of paint, how many coats, crack and hole repairs, water damage how much furniture to move, ceilings and are they vaulted or pop corn, amount of trim and doors, amount of time a room can be down, caulking to be done, color should never be extra only specialty finishes , wall paper removal and repair plus prep. so just find out whats included. painted for 30 years and for myself for 15years no advertisement , only word of mouth referrals . crim's painting |

I have been a painting contractor in NJ for 25 years. I see some of these prices quoted and am shocked. The reason estimates are so different are usally illegal contractors. Always make sure your contractor is State licensed and insured for at least a million dollars. Always get 3 estimates and always call references. If you do those 3 things 99% of the time there won't be over pricing issues or non professional painting being performed. 70% of my customers are refurrals. That's your best bet. Talk to friends and family. Scott Stewart |

My bathroom is 15x20. Walls were off white, to be painted taupe, white ceiling and trim. One wall had glued on mirror to repair. I had to buy the paint, painter insisted it needed a primer and 3 coats for the WHOLE bathroom. Charged by the hour, took 5.5 working DAYS, and charged me $1000 plus $300 for paint. Was this too much? Last time we painted, it took two days. |

I own a small contracting business in Lake Lure, NC. You need to have the contactor break down the cost between the painting of the home and the cabinets. Next inquire if the cabinets are going to be removed or done in place. Depending on the needed prep of the home you shouldn't be paying more than $2300.00(high end) for the home. There is a lot of variables with the cabinets, are you changing from stain to paint?, is the wood damaged?, how many cabinets are there? I would suggest asking how many hours they are expecting to expend on the cabinets. You should expect to pay aprox. $40.00 per hour for proper refurbishing of the cabinets. Good luck |

A painter quoted me $7000 to paint the interior of a 1500 sq ft 3 BR 2 BA home, including a vaulted living room popcorn ceiling (no other ceiling work), and about a dozen kitchen cabinets which would have to be sanded, primed, and coated with 2 coats of oil paint. The price is for one coat on the walls, and two coats on all the trim. Cost of paint is included in the bid. Any comments? |

I agree with "a user somewhere in Ga." I am a professional painter self employed 15yrs. I can honestly say that you get what you pay for! Despite the current economy, there are two elements that are causing or contributing to the wide range in price, #1 the above mentioned "Aliens" who are not paying taxes..., #2 the unlicensed/uninsured painter ridding under the radar that are virtually just giving the work away in regards to cutthroat price, and are nowhere to be found when their substandard efforts fail. There is a difference in a quality job done well, and it's worth the little extra cost to have lasting results and peace of mind knowing it was done right the first time. |
