How Much Does a Sewer Inspection Cost?

  Typical costs:
  • A residential video sewer inspection can cost $100-$800, but averages about $250-$500, depending on the length of the pipes, local rates, if the inspection is being done in conjunction with other work or as a separate job, and whether the images are just sent to a monitor or are recorded for later viewing.
  • For example, a plumber on a forum sponsored by tool manufacturer Ridgid reports charging $125 for a camera inspection done as part of clearing out a sewer line with a cable and cutting blade (called snaking) or $225 if done separately. And video inspection rates at Allied Drain Cleaning[1] in Connecticut start at $175, while Covenant Pipeline[2] in California charges a minimum of $275 for up to two hours and $175 per hour for each additional hour.

What should be included:
  • Running a video camera through the household sewer pipes (typically from the house to its connection to the public sewer system) can be used to evaluate the type and condition of underground pipes, and to identify problems like leaking or broken joints, intruding roots, blockages, corrosion or collapsed pipes. Homeowners might have a video inspection done to find the cause of periodic sewer backups or other ongoing problems, or when selling or buying an older house.
  • A camera on the end of a long cable is fed through the sewer line and sends back images that can be viewed on a monitor and may be recorded for later viewing. A stream of water from the house may be run through the pipes during the inspection to make it easier to move the camera and to provide an "up" visual reference. A Colorado plumber has a video demonstration of the inspection process[3] .
  • Video sewer inspections are not typically included in a standard home inspection, and are usually ordered separately, if needed. Many experts recommend doing a video sewer inspection on a house built more than 25 years ago. Prior to 1984, many homes were constructed with clay sewer pipes, which are easily broken or crushed. A video sewer inspection may also be helpful if water is backing up inside the house or crawlspace, if there are large trees in the yard near the sewer or if the ground has moved or settled near the sewer line. A Colorado home inspector explains when a sewer inspection may be needed[4] .
Additional costs:
  • Some consumers complain that companies offering low-cost sewer inspections may charge relatively high rates for needed repairs discovered during the video process. Before hiring a company to just do a video inspection, ask about its fees for standard repairs.
Shopping for a sewer inspection:
  • Many plumbing companies and sewer contractors now offer sewer inspections. Ask for recommendations from family, friends, neighbors or co-workers, or at the local home improvement or hardware store. CIDNetwork.com lists tips for choosing a plumber[5] .
  • Before choosing a plumber ask for and check references; verify that the company is properly bonded, insured and licensed[6] ; and check for any complaints with the Better Business Bureau[7] .

Unplugging a toilet by Ace / Legacy Plumbing
Amount: $991.00

Length of Pipes: Not sureOther Work: Hot water heater repl.
After the repairer replaced the water heater,(which he was NOT called to do but saw it leaking so I allowed him to replace, 1800.00) he then began to unplug the toilet, which he said would be no charge because of the water heater replacement. however after he began unplugging the toilet, and said that the snake tool was not working, he then did a video inspection on a 16 year old house, that did not have a back up in any of the sinks, shower, bathtubs of he house), which he showed the video, what I thought to be a ball of roots. He then quoted me three different prices/options: gold $2053, Silver $1711, bronze $991, and a "band Aid Repair $472. I chose the Bronze $991, after a long deliberation with myself, and later calling a friend. He is excavating the concrete to get to the line, tearing up the tile to get to the line to make a replacement. The job is not finished, please see other comments about this company written by Dynamite. Feeling uneasy.....
