How Much Does a Charcoal Grill Cost?

low costSmall, Portable Grills: $10-$100average costBackyard Kettle Grills: $50-$250high costHigh-End Charcoal Grills: $800-$3,000

There's nothing quite like an outdoor summer barbecue with meat, vegetables and more sizzling on the grill. The flames from a charcoal grill give food a delicious smoky flavor, and this effect can be enhanced by adding wood chips to the fire.

Typical costs:

  • Small portable grills for picnics, camping, tailgating parties and other outings can start at $10-$20, but average $30-$100, like the Weber Smokey Joe ($30-$66), which is 17" high, 14.25" wide and 14.5" deep, and comes in gold or silver. Inexpensive portable grills are usually not as durable and are prone to rust. Higher-quality models have a locking lid, making transportation easier and safer.
  • A hibachi is a popular option for a portable charcoal grill. A small table-top model is typically about one foot long and is good at grilling burgers, kebabs or other small items. Hibachis made of sheet-metal start around $10-$20, but rust easily and typically don't last long. Solid cast-iron hibachis are more durable, and can cost $25-$150 or more. The Son of Hibachi Grill sells for $45-$60; in it's open position it is 24.5" long, 10" wide and 7.75" high, while folded it is 17" tall, 10: wide and 5" deep, The Lodge Logic Sportsman Grill is a hibachi-style grill that runs $110-$140 for a cast iron unit that is 19" long, 10.24" wide and 8.25" high, with two adjustable grill heights. The more expensive hibachi-style grills are made of high quality cast iron, and the grill is also cast iron.
  • A typical kettle-style backyard charcoal grill can cost $50-$250. The classic Weber 22.5-inch One-Touch Silver sells for $90-$115. Basically a large metal ball on wheeled legs, the kettle shape lets the heat circulate under the coals, making it easier to start and maintain a fire, and giving the food more of a charcoal smoky flavor. More expensive models can run as high as $250-$550, are made with higher-quality metal, and may have wheels, a trolley to hold food and tools, a built-in thermometer or even a propane gas starter to ignite the charcoal, like the Weber Performer 22.5 ($300-$335).
  • Hooded charcoal grills with a box-like or barrel shape on a wheeled cart start about $100-$250 for smaller models, like the Char-Griller Outlaw ($160-$200, depending on whether the optional Texas-style firebox is included). Larger models can cost $300-$600 or more. High-end charcoal grills with all the bells and whistles for an upscale outdoor kitchen or barbecue area can cost $800-$3,000 or more. Examples include the Napoleon Charcoal Grill[1] with a stainless-steel enclosed storage space below the grill and a rear rotisseries, at $930-$980, or the heavy-duty Grillery Standard[2] at $2,500-$2,700 with a 20"x19" grilling surface; it's 44" high, 22" deep and 24" wide.

What should be included:
  • It can take time and experience to learn how to get a charcoal fire burning properly, and cleanup can be messy. BarbecueHut.com provides an overview[3] of the different types of charcoal grills.
  • Charcoal grills may be sold in the box or assembled by the store. There should be vents both top and bottom to regulate the smoke, fire and heat. The better grills also have an ash pan located under the grill base. The Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association lists safety[4] and grill cleaning tips[5] for charcoal barbecues.
Additional costs:
  • Lighter fluid to start the charcoal costs about $5-$15 a quart. Those who don't like the taste lighter fluid can give to food can use a charcoal chimney starter ($5-$30) instead. A video shows how to use a charcoal chimney[6] .
  • A cover to protect the grill from the weather can add another $5-$60.
  • Tools such as tongs, a fork, a spatula or a knife; cooking aids like skewers or a meat thermometer; protective gear such as gloves/mitts; and a grill cleaning brush and pads can add $20-$150 or more to the total cost.
Shopping for a charcoal grill:
  • In selecting a grill, consider the space available for using and storing it, the type of food typically being cooked, and the number of people usually eating. Lowe's provides guidelines[7] for buying a charcoal grill.
  • Major manufacturers include Char-Broil[8] , Char-Griller and Weber. Most manufacturers provide links to local dealers.
  • Charcoal grills are sold at big-box discount stores like Target[9] and Walmart[10] ; home improvement centers like Home Depot[11] and Lowe's[12] ; local specialty barbecue or patio stores; and online retailers such as Amazon[13] .
