Sometimes called French windows, traditional French doors have multiple small windows the full length of the door, often with a molded panel across the bottom. Today, "French door" can refer to any door that is mostly glass. French doors are commonly installed in hinged pairs that open in the center to create a wide doorway with no middle post, but a French door can be just a single door or three doors. Traditional French doors swing into a room, but space-saving out-swing models are available. HomeTips.com describes types of French doors[1] .

Typical costs:

  • Door prices vary considerably; consumers may be quoted significantly different prices for the same brand and model door from different retailers. French doors are typically more expensive than solid doors, because the French door frame must be strong enough to hold the weight of the glass without sagging or twisting, and often three high-quality hinges are required per door. Traditional French doors are made of hardwood, but modern versions are also available in fiberglass, aluminum, steel, or wood clad (wood covered with vinyl or aluminum on the outdoor portion, but displaying only wood inside the room). The small windows are called lites; an eight-lite French door has two columns of four windows each, and a 15-lite door has three columns of five windows each.
  • A basic set of two French doors typically cost $300-$800, depending on materials (usually steel or aluminum) and options like built-in blinds or shades (sandwiched between the double panes of glass). For example, Lowe's offers its store brand Reliabilt 10-Lite Steel French Patio Doors[2] for about $325 for double doors 5'-6' wide; or $700 with built-in blinds[3] . Installation can double the cost, or about $600-$1,200 for labor and materials.
  • Expect to pay $1,000-$3,000 or more for a more durable, decorative and/or energy-efficient set of double French doors. Prices vary based on materials, style, width, height and options like triple-pane glass, built-in blinds/shades, or outswing doors. The Andersen 400 Series Frenchwood 2-Panel Outswing Doors[4] with solid wood, energy-efficient glass and French-style grills cost $2,400-$2,800. Installation adds roughly half to two-thirds of the price, although it can cost even more if an opening needs to be made in a solid wall rather than replacing existing doors. Total costs for materials and labor can be $1,500-$4,500 or more depending on the height, width and price of the doors, and the complexity of the installation.
  • Single French doors start at about $50-$200 for a basic interior model, and $200-$1,000 or more for a more durable and decorative single French door. InteriorDoorsDirect.com charges $313 for a 1-3/8" Thick Divided Lite Clear Glass French Door in Poplar[5] that's 36" wide and 80" high with 15 panes (lites) of glass, or $847 for a 1-3/4" Thick French Door in Walnut[6] 36" wide and 80" high with a single long pane of patterned glass.
  • A set of triple French-style doors can cost $2,000 -$5,000 or more, depending on materials, size, style and whether they are inswing or outswing. For example, the Andersen 400 Series Frenchwood 3-Panel Inswing Hinged Patio Doors[7] with a wood interior clad with a low-maintenance exterior starts at $2,725.

What should be included:
  • The decorative structural elements between the window panes of a French door are called mullions. Traditional French doors use single panes of glass, but modern exterior French doors use double-pane or triple-pane glass for greater energy efficiency.
  • Installation typically takes a day or two, depending on whether an existing French or sliding door is being replaced or if a new opening needs to be made in an existing wall. HGTV.com provides a video[8] and written instructions[9] for removing sliding glass patio doors and replacing them with French doors. ThisOldHouse.com explains how to replace two windows with French doors[10] .
Shopping for french doors:
  • French doors are available through home improvement centers like Home Depot[11] or Lowe's[12] , and often good deals may be available through small local lumberyards. Or search for a local door and window dealer through the American Window and Door Institute[13] .
  • An accurate installation estimate can only be done on-site, as measurements need to be precise and the condition of the existing frame and surrounding wall needs to be evaluated. If hiring an installer, verify that the company is properly insured, bonded and licensed[14] ; ask for and check references, and look for any complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau[15] .
