Loosely defined, a handyman performs a wide range of basic home maintenance and repairs ranging from simple ones like fixing a squeaky door, hanging storm windows, to more complex projects like installing cabinets or weatherproofing. A lot depends on the expertise of the individual handyman or service company and the desires of the homeowner.
Typical costs:
Traditionally most handymen worked independently, setting their own hours and rates and gaining reputations by word of mouth. In the last few decades, professional handyman "services" have sprung up, either as local businesses with teams of employees or as a national chain.
Expect to pay about $30-$50 an hour for an independent handyman in rural or less expensive areas and $40-$60 an hour in more urban locations or regions with a higher cost of living. These rates are just average estimates, and will vary considerably by region and by individual worker. Some handymen charge a lump sum for a specific project, depending on the complexity.
Depending on the skills needed, rates run $60-$125 an hour for a professional handyman company. There's often a $150-$350 minimum charge and there can be a $30-$100 "trip" charge (if the worker needs to go buy materials). A professional handyman company usually has several employees, providing a wider range of skills, and screens employees for experience and reliability.
What should be included:
Make a list of everything that needs doing, because it's usually cheaper to have it all done at once rather than as separate small projects. Ask if you can purchase basic supplies on your own time instead of paying the handyman to drive to get them.
It's not always cheaper to hire a handyman instead of a licensed specialist to perform extensive plumbing or electrical projects, or other complex work. A handyman could be unfamiliar with what's needed and take a lot longer to do the job. In some states handyman can work without a contractor's license as long as they stick to minor repair work, but bigger jobs usually require a contractor's license. Check with local and state officials.
Discounts:
Some agencies offer free or low-cost home repairs for low-income seniors; check with your local senior center or department on aging, but be aware that these programs frequently have a waiting list.
Shopping for a handyman:
The Colorado Springs Gazette details questions to ask when hiring a handyman and lists common scams. Experts warn against scam artists who operate with little more than a truck, tools and cell phone; they collect deposits and then leave town without doing the work.
For referrals to a good local handyman, check with friends and relatives or ask for recommendations from a locally owned hardware store or real estate management firm. If you pick a handyman from a phone listing (without any sort of word-of-mouth recommendation), some experts suggest checking with local law enforcement for a police record.
When using a service, ask about turnover rates and how they screen their employees.
Whether using an independent handyman or a nationally-linked service, get several estimates and a final written bid/contract that specifies what work will be done, including start and finish times, payment schedules, type of materials used and who will provide them, and whether the handyman will pull the necessary permits for a larger project.
Even an independent should be bonded and have a business license as well as liability and workers' compensation insurance. Request at least three references and check them all. If applicable, check whether the handyman is licensed in your state. See if there are any complaints with the Better Business Bureau.
This guy knows his stuff. Worked for years as a Heating and Airman so he knew his electrical and plumbing. We have used him for several years. Good Christan man, he has a prayer list of people he knows and customers and prays for them everyday Company is The New Classic Handyman and his number is 919-282-3580
Good price for exceptional work. Very fair man. Others wanted far too much. I had a hot water tank installed and some additional plumbing work done, along with the install of a ceiling fan.
There is nothing like a responsible handyman who is confident in his work. His deal is simple pay him 30 dollars per hr or what you think it is worth. Lets put it this way I always pay him more then 30 per hr. He will share his ideas, asks specifics as to what I expect and looking for in a job. He is neet, timely, clean and respectful. He alwys tells me he will work on my home like it is his own, He always presents me options along the way. He says he does it for the exersise instead of joining a gym.

We needed a bathroom floor tiled, new fixtures replaced and 2 ceiling fans installed and he replaced the bathroom mirror for a total of 2 days worth of work. Each day he showed up on time, was very courteous and friendly. He will be our first choice for anything else we need.
For new customers I charge 35.00 to 55.00 per hour, but it also depends on the job I may give a general price, otherwise for repeat customers 29.00 an hour.
We Use Service Metro Restoration they charge $35.00 an hour which is more then reasonable for the excellent work they do. I will recommended them to everyone. Their number is 763-438-0218

I hired a handyman from a company called vinyl solutions to do some work on my house. His name was Kenneth Frie. There was wood rot around my windows and it caused leaking in my house. His crew was very professional. He told me that he would have it replaced and finished in 2 days and it was. I am very satisfied with their work He is truly a perfectionist I highly recommend him for your jobs also. He is professional and witty. I contacted him through his email at kenneth@advancevinylsolutions.com
my air had quit and it was a saturday at 830@ night with friends in town, i called Mr. Fixx It in hampstead nc and he came out had our air going in like 30 minutes and i ask him what else he did come to find out he also does all repairs in and out of your home, so i offered hima carpet job, came back on the following monday and did that too, i had the carpet, very nice respectful and clean, was also fully insured and bonded, will call him from now on for anything...
Free estimate s COST US MONEY ! So there's no such thing ...What i've done is give people a choice 35 dollars per hour plus material or I beat an written estimate by 10 % .. Time and material is the fairest way to charge everyone , How many times have you gotten an estimate and it ended up more than told ? want to save money , say you want a light fixture installed , purchase the light , call handyman set day and time clear area where light is to be installed , in most case's this should only take an hour 35 to 65 dollars ..... simple enough .......
We hired Premier Home Services Group for our remodeling project. By the end of the project we calculaed that they cost us about $30.00 an hour which is more then reasonable for the excellent work they do. I will recommended them to everyone. Their number is (630)518-6450.
Wherr are ypu getting your price information from ???
Amount: $65.00 per hour

I am an independant handyman in Chicago.Il.I currently charge $65 per hr.There is no reason why independants should charge up to $60 less per hr. than the larger outfits because they need to pay for there ad's and van logos/painting.The local larger companies charge between $85 and $136 per hr. and mark up their on hand materials by 30% margin. These numbers are current and the same for this whole area, rural areas included. You "self help sites" need to get your facts straight !!!!!!
$75 is the going rate in most large cities. With that being said, getting multiple projects completed will cost roughly $65 per hour. There is usually a charge for material pick-up also; however you can avoid this charge by shopping for materials and picking them up yourself. The best way to hire a service is to find one that offers flat-rates. You'll save money this way.
Excellent work, was willing to work with our schedule, from repairs and painting to drywall and landscaping, went with us to pick up the material, no extra charges, have recommended him to all our friends and family. five stars!
I needed electrical, some odds and ends done around the house and some plumbing. He was great! He even called to follow up to make sure everything was working correctly. He has now done work for several other people I know and everyone was more than satisfied!
This business is run by Terry Adair, a former idustrial maintenance manager. He offers a wide varity of services and is particular at what he does. He has done a bathroom remodel, wood fence and various other projects for us.

Joe Papay of 1651 E. Elgin St. CHANDLER (phone number 4803639411) defrauded me of nearly $20,000 over the course of a year. I live overseas and employed Joe Papay to do work on 3 properties I purchased for investment.\\r\\nHis original quote to complete renovations on my properties was $10,000. However he continuously requested I pay him more money until I had given him nearly $20,000 and had no more money left. I then had people check on the properties in Phoenix to discover he had completed almost no work on the properties.\\r\\nI discovered I had been the victim of a scam artist. \\r\\nI am writing this in the hope that no one else will be a victim of this con man.
I recently hired Juan Camacho from Camacho\\\\\\\'s Handyman to repair my washing machine, closet sliding doors and he changed one of my bathroom faucets. I originally hired him to just fix my washing machine, and found that he did an outstanding job for a very reasonable price. I was worried that there would not be a fix to my washing machine, but he was able to repair it. He charges $50 for the first hour, then $25 per hour for the remaining time. After seeing that he did such a fabulous job on my washing machine, for such a reasonable price, I hired him to do more repairs in my home. I HIGHLY recommend Camacho\\\\\\\'s Handyman! He can definitely get any job done!
