Tree Trimming, or pruning, eliminates dead or dying limbs and dangerous branches. Pruning also allows for healthy new growth and an aesthetic shape. Trimmers quote the cost of each tree separately, based on their hourly rate times their estimate of how long it will take.
Typical costs:
Assuming no buildings or utilities are nearby, a 30-foot high tree like a Black Mulberry, Dogwood or Russian Olive will cost $75-$437 to trim, depending on the type and condition of the tree.
A tree from 30-60 feet tall--including the Black Alder, Black Gum and Crabapple--in the same open area can run $150-$874.
Trimming a Red Oak, Pine or Black Locust tree just over 60-feet high without obstacles averages $200-$1,000+.
Tree Help.com offers how-to help for homeowners who want to take care of the trimming. They sell hand-held pruners and loppers at $36 that can be useful on smaller branches and fruit trees. A gas pole pruner runs $179 at Home Depot.com.
Trimming trees near high voltage electrical lines is dangerous. Contact the local utilities department which is responsible for clearing trees and branches away from lines.
What should be included:
When trees are near buildings or power lines, the tree limbs cannot just be dropped to the ground. Each end to be cut must be "roped down." The climber ties a rope around the piece to be cut off. After cutting, the section of wood is lowered slowly to the ground. Because this process takes longer, it will cost more.
Larger jobs result in a greater amount of felled wood. Homeowners have the option to keep it for firewood or pay to have it chipped or hauled away.
Additional costs:
Clearing deadwood--cutting away dead or broken limbs--from an 80-foot oak can cost about $1,050 with the clear use of a bucket truck, all around the tree. The same tree will cost closer to $1,400 if cut by a climber and no access exists for a truck.
Emergency work--after hours or weekends--can run around $250 per hour.
Hiring a trimmer from out of the area usually results in additional drive-time pay.
We have a Washingtonia robusta palm in front of our house -- the tall, thin, common kind. It's around 30' tall. It looks a little bad because the last 10' has a thick, curled-up, shrub-like gray husk from where the palm fronds used to be. We've asked a few tree pruning services, and every one has quoted $300 to prune the palm. They claim it's so expensive because the tree is so tall and they have to specially dispose of palm tree leaves.

We discussed removing the 3 broken branches and 'tipping' the lower branches. They cut everthing away from the lower half. Very unhappy. negotiated paying $1,000. Still very high.

Remember that Tree Care is truly a service that falls into the category of "you get what you pay for". Licensed and Insured companies do cost a little more than the door knockers, but the difference in service can be priceless. Tree work is dangerous and only a trained professional should be allowed on your property. The best way to get a competitive bid is to get at least 3 bids from competing licensed companies. Look on the web.
We had several large evergreens removed from around the house, it was nice having a tree expert proform the work. Ichabods Tree Experts in Westminster Maryland www.ichabodstree.com
Some guy on Craigslist is paying 100.00 to remove his dead cedar tree from his property. He wants it cut down and hauled away for 100.00. I Emailed him and told him that I would "make it fall on his property for 100 bux" He wondered why he was getting such high estimates.
Pine tree uprooted in storm was leaning on electrical wires. They cut tree down, ground the stump. For $50 more trimmed dogwood that hung over the fence.
This guy were not bad at all. The job is done, and no damages resulted. I could note the experience in the contractor which I need to hear when services charge bottom market rates. I was told $300 per day.

Neighbors had some live oaks nicely trimmed for $50 a tree by these guys and recommended them. Our trees are quite a bit bigger and have never had a good thinning, so they asked for $150 a tree, but accepted $125. This price did not include haul-off - they stacked on curb for the city's monthly bulk waste pickup.
Got a couple of quotes ranging from 2500 to 6500 for taking down 2 live pines, 2 dead pines, and one massive 145' tall pine. Best quote was at 400 per tree and 1000 for the big tree. I was pleased with their efficiency and the pine mulch they let me keep.
Total spent: $2,000. Three large, mature trees, all near or extending over the house. Two of the three trees over the power and cable lines to the house. Power and cable lines were damaged as a consequence of the tree work.
Contractor: S & S Trere & Landscaping (Steve Settle)
Work was done for neighbor. S & S left large branches in my yard, severely damaged a Japanese maaple more than 20 feet away from the trees. Do not use this contractor.

Amount spent was with senior disc 10%. I'm sure I could have done better with someone else but this guy was a smooth talker, he had his men on the sight before I could even sign up for superguarntee and this was late afternoon. My biggest complaint was all his expensive equipment he bragged about had problems with leaking oil, rubber coming off the treads leaving terrible gouges throughout our yard. Pretty much everything was inclusive in this deal down to removing stumps and feeder roots. He made me think I was getting a real deal when he threw in a load of dirt and a 40lb bag of grass seed. Very poorly completed and I was left to water 'til the cows come home. I feel guilty using the water on such a pathectic mess. There's more I could comment about but I won't bore you.
These guys did a out standing job on removing a large hazardous tree that was over hanging a shed and fence. The owner also took several pics of the removal process and e-mailed then to me while I was at work. I highly recommend custom cuts tree service 817 808 9004 they do work all over the dfw area. Will use them again.
I got quotes ranging from 500 - 1800 for trimming 3 trees. Went with the cheapest and ended up paying 100$ more to take more off than originally quoted. Contractor and his helper took 3 days to complete the job..about half the time was cutting up the felled branches to fit in his pickup, so not the most efficient. Cut trees from 40 ft high to 15-20 ft.
Had huge, multi-trunk junk maple growing near house. Contractor quoted very reasonable price. Got the tree down in half a day, cleaned up mess very well, left plenty of firewood for the neighbor to take for free. Good quality service at reasonable price, would recommend. I'm having them out again this summer to trim another maple in front yard.
We had two pine trees taken down beside our house that required alot of cutting limbs an lower them and the service was outstanding,it was a husband and wife family business the clean-up was great with nothing left behind nice and friendly crew.we have had a few tree companys in the past that took our money or never did the whole job.we would recommend this company to everyone.
