Remodeling costs vary widely depending on the shape and square footage of the existing room, whether walls or plumbing are moved, and the quality of materials used.
According to an annual construction cost survey by Remodeling Magazine, a mid-range remodel of a 5x7-foot bathroom averages $14,109-$18,864; for an upscale expansion of a 5x7 bathroom to 9x9-feet within the existing house footprint, costs run $46,865-$59,456. These are averages; actual costs may be higher or lower.

We gutted a traditional hall bath and created a larger zero entry shower, a deep soak tub, a 72" vanity and a shallow linen cabinet. We also widened the entry door. A lot of tile work to get the shower perfect and quartz countertops.
The prices that people are sharing is a joke . We picked out the tile for the floor , shower walls and mud floor , vanity and granite top , shower and vanity fixtures, mirror, new vanity lighting , toilet paper holder towel bar and Sherwin Williams paint color . Our Contractor purchased our selections. We were given a budget for each item . The tile bodget was $4.00 a foot . We went over budget on the tile as my wife of course chose a boarder tile that was about $16 a foot ! We purchased a new fan on Amazon. That was extra . The materials cost more than most of these folks are saying they paid for their entire project?? In addition to what we picked out which was priced at about $3,400 the fan cost about $175 . The contractor supplied the Cement Board, niche , Paint etc. I also researched and insisted on Cement board on the floors as well as waterproofing the 3 shower walls and Floor . It took 9 days and looks great . There is no way these prices are real . It is very misleading.
We have a 1951 vintage home and the 2 downstairs baths are back to back with the smaller bath as an on suite to the master bedroom. Both needed updating and a total remodel so we added a few feet from the hallway and just got the estimate above. I was floored by the price quote. Ceramic tile surrounds, pvc flooring, cast iron tubs, canned lighting, hand grips because we are elderly. Not much fancy but one nice vanity in the on suite. Redoing all sheet rock and making the on suite the larger bath so the other one is quite small and rather plain. Anyone care to comment on this price?? I have one other contractor who hasn't gotten back to me yet.
1968 home. Replaced all fixtures. Replaced rotted sub floor (2 layers) replaced drywall around tub and tiled. Installed gfci outlet. Scabbed 3 floor joist. Re leveled 1 floor joist. Installed sheet vinyl for floor. New baseboard. no quarter round or shoe molding. Prime and paint walls and ceiling 2 coats. Did all the work myself and came in under 1500 materials cost.
Items Remodeled: Tub alcove tile, vanity, floor, walls
Some of the work was done ourselves to save $2,000-$3,000. I have a design background and took advantage of contractor discounts on products. Finishes are mid to high end. Cost breakdown Tub $1800 Subway tile $1500 (mid-range with some trim) Kohler Artisan fixtures $1500 DIY Tub and plumbing installation $0 Tile installation: $1500 Vanity: $2500 + $500 install Floor tile: $550 (Black Hex Travertine) Install board and batten on walls, replace window trim, add closet trim and crown molding: $1200. Misc materials and tools: $1200
We had our small master bath gutted. The cost includes new Crystal brand cabinetry, all new tile in shower and on the lower part of the walls, with a decorative tile accent. Also includes new fixtures including an undermount sink, quartz countertops, new tile floor, glass shower door, all new faucets in ORB, a medicine cabinet and a large mirror and lighting. I was a little surprised for such a small bath, but this is a dompany I have worked with in the past and they are superb and take care of everything!
The posted comment shares for this bathroom remodel topic seem absurdly low!! My project for customer entails an entire bathroom gutting: new drywall at all sides, fourth wall pushed out two feet: the one entirely new wall framed out, door hung. three walls chair rail tiled. Entirely new shower stall- expanded out 16 inches, new pan, new framing- cement board, drain needs to be moved out 8 inches to bring to new center, shower faucets and head also need to be re-plumbed to the new center. shower stall to be fully re-tiled in ceramic, including lowered section ceiling in stall New hanging glass door to be installed. Floor to be pulled up new sub floor. Sink moved across room to new wall requiring new drainage piping and water lines installed beneath sub-floor(the angle requires cutting water pipe and drain holes through floor joist or raising the floor. Toilet stays. New vanity and electrical at the sink. New overhead light above mirror at sink, new exhaust fan.

Square Ft of Bathroom: 35 sqft
Items Remodeled: custom floor shower
Im currently remodeling my lower level bathroom.
The same work for a client i would charge about 7500 for a custom bathroom remodel! Here's the math to demo and rebuild my bath room! Avg price for tile, toilet, custom shower base, vanity and plumbing fixtures with lighting about 2500 for materials multiply that by 2 for your labor cost! Remember this! You get what you pay for
We redid our bathroom with new tile on floors and walls as well as a new double vanity and paint.we hired Jdh home improvement they did an amazing job.in addition they were very professional and polite. We will be using them again.Jeremy 401-688-3639 there website is www.jdhhomeimprovement.com
Had a small leak that ruined the vinyl floor in our guest bathroom - and after 10 years it needed a little sprucing up. So we retile the bathtub surround, tiled the floor, swapped the position of the toilet and vanity and replaced the shower controllers. I did all the work myself..took 7 hard days of work. The tile - at the time- seemed to be going fast but the hours fly buy so i spent 4 days just on the tile. We also picked what we wanted and didnt worry about price too much. The tile was $6 or so a square foot OUCH. the vanity top which was cambria was $600 OUCH OUCH. Got a great deal on the vanity from woodmark. Shower controller and faucet from delta were another $1000. Ouch ouch ouch. It does look great. The price was a little above the budget we got from www.remodelormove.com cost calculators but hope this bathroom lasts 20 years..that is only $175 or so a year..not too bad :)
Gutted 1956 Bathroom and did considerable structural repair from water damage. Rearranged room for more efficient layout. $3400 in materials and $4300 in labor. Rewired, redid hvac, new plumbing (old cast iron removed), travertine on floor, mid-grade faucets (moen), dual floating vanity, new glass door into bathroom, new window, tile around soaking tub/shower and travertine floor. We also spent extra on epoxy grout...your spouse will love you forever knowing they never need to clean grout ever again. It's pricey, but definitely consider it. Best money I've every spent...project took 10 days exactly and ZERO stress.
A half bath remodel including all materials ($750+) and labor ($500+) but wall paint (done by myself). New toilet, 26"W dark wood cabinet, sink, faucet, wood-framed mirror, ceramic tiles (floor and baseboard), threshold, lighting, switches, towel hanger, toilet paper holder installed. I did not compromise with cheap materials, and still the total cost was much cheaper than I expected. Since half baths are often on the 1st floor and guests frequently use it, it is a good investment!
We spent $3,385.00 on labor for total gut and some drywall, this also includes tile work, plumbing and electrical work. We spent $3,055.14 total on materials which include a deep soaking bathtub, with wall surround, new Kohler toilet, beautiful tile for the floor and tall vanity which we got at Lowes. We splurged on Pottery Barn Mirror and certain fixtures, curved shower curtain which we love. Some replumbing had to happen, also some electrical work had to be done. We are happy with the results.
I took thiis job on myself. Framed out a section of room, corner shower, tile surround and floor, electrical, window install, exhaust fan/heat unit install, sheetrock and paint, copper plumbing (quick connects and solder), install all hardware- 150-160 hrs not inluding shopping trips.
I have a very very very small bathroom, 5x6 wall to wall, with a shorty tub and shower. I went out and got quote after quote after quote. all in different ball parks, one guy said $9,000, another $7,000, one $5900. the prices were all over the place and for such a small bathroom and for economy tile and fixtures was way to high for my budget. I ended up having a friend do it on the weekends for $2000 and i bought all the material. In the end it cost me $4,300 but with all high end fixtures, tile, and sink.
It pays to get more than 3 estimates!
We had to gut out all of the old fixtures and we extended the bathroom out 2 feet into the walk in closet. We purchased a Rinnai water heater for about $1,200, bought a large oval deep bathtub and had a friend jet it, total cost about $700. The big cost was tiling everything with ornate tile. We went a little crazy. The labor was the expensive part but we didn't have to worry about anything. The small accessories were bought locally but the Price Pfister Catalina Roman Tub faucet - Tuscan Bronze was bought online and the delta faucet was bought from http://deisgnerpolumbingoutlet.com for about. If we had not done the tile the project would have been much less.
I remodeled our bathroom completely with quality finishes. Never done any of the work before so I learned as I went.
New tiled floor, tiled 3 walls around shower and installed 3 foot by 4inch granite cap on the shelf. New shower head, trim kit and tub head (rubbed oil finish). New dark cherry 31" vanity comort height, undermount sink with granite counter top, new oil rubbed facet, new mirror, light fixtures replaced on ceiling and wall, new toilet, primed and painted walls and ceiling, bamboo shade.
It's incredible how great it looks with just a little hard work at such a low cost. I originally priced around for the tie job and they were going to charge me $1800 just for that alone. I ened up doing it for the cost of materials which was about $500 tile, grout, adhesive.
This was a typical hall way full bath. Standard 5 foot tub, tiled surround. 1 window. Small vanity. Composite countertop with integrated sink. The wall was double thick for plumbing so we recessed a 7 inch deep cabinet in the wall.. a nice feature. Flooring just vinyl which we will replace this year. Did all the work ourselves less the plumbing. Next time will do the plumbing too! took about 5 full days. It turned out nice..better than it was!
If you are looking for a quick online estimating tool. www.remodelestimates.com has an online tool that gives OK cost estimates..can never replace a detailed quote..but gives you a quick idea of the costs of things.
Items Remodeled: Turned 3 season porch into powder room
My husband gutted and insulated our three season porch, added a wall and installed plumbing for a new powder room. The plumbing was relatively easy since the upstairs bathroom was directly above the new bathroom. It was his first stab at plumbing and he found it relatively painless. Lots of DIY books out there to help along the way. We estimate that with materials and fixtures we spend approx. $1,750.
Items Remodeled: Expanded from 8x10 to 10x10, travertine tile, separate tub and shower, vanities
My husband and I remodeled our master bath by taking out a tub/shower combination, and making a separate spa tub and shower. In order to do this we had to move the wall of the bathroom out 2 feet. We also moved the toilet from it's original location in the sight line of the doorway behind a wall. The labor was free, but, you have to be pretty handy to do it. The tools and plumbing, electrical cost around $50. The bathtub was $750, the shower surround was $750, and we also got 2 separate vanities for $600 total. We spent $1,000 on travertine tiles which will cover the floor, up to chair rail height, and the shower and tub surround. Drywall was about $8 a sheet, and we used 10 sheets. The toilet we bought was $250. The remaining cost was in fixtures, $700 for multiple jet shower heads, and we hired professional drywall finishers to make the job look as professionally done as we feel it is!
