A potting bench or table is a specialized work area designed for gardening tasks like potting plants or transplanting seedlings. It should have a work surface that is high enough to be comfortable to use when standing (typically about waist high).Many models provide storage for gardening tools, pots and potting soil. Some potting benches are placed inside a greenhouse or potting shed, but most are kept outdoors and need to be made of weather-resistant materials, such as cedar wood, vinyl or metal.

Typical costs:

  • A basic potting bench can cost $50-$250, depending on size and materials. These are usually simple set-ups with a work area, one bottom shelf and perhaps a small overhead shelf. Potting benches in this price range tend to be made from less expensive wood, galvanized metal or plastic.   • Large, efficient and decorative potting benches with lots of drawers, shelves and other gardener-friendly options (like an outdoor sink), and made with high-quality wood can cost $500-$1,200 or more, depending on size and materials. For example, Eli's Potting Bench[1] from Forever Redwood is 42" long, 21' deep and 64" high, with a parquet wood tabletop, two drawers and two shelves. It can be made using Douglas fir ($910), Redwood ($985), mature redwood ($1,185) or old-growth redwood ($1,515). Possible options include copper drawer inserts ($85-$150), casters ($79), premium sealant for outdoor use ($30) and custom engraving ($30).

  • The height of the work space, stability, durability (especially if used outdoors) and efficiency (amount of storage and work space) are all important factors in choosing a potting bench. List the tasks that will be performed at the bench, and the tools and supplies needed. Make sure the main work space is a comfortable height to work when standing at the bench, and consider how much space is available for the potting bench.
