Residential mailboxes come in a number of styles, including free-standing post-mounted boxes, mailboxes attached to the side of the house, locking mailboxes and mailboxes with package boxes included.
Typical costs:
A residential mailbox costs $12-$900. Mailboxes are sold at hardware and home improvement stores such as Home Depot[1] , Lowe's[2] , Sears[3] and Ace Hardware[4] .
A mail slot costs $25-$325. Mail slots come sized to fit letters, magazines, or packages, and can be made of aluminum, brass, stainless steel, bronze and other metals. Smaller mail slots[5] made with lighter metals cost $25-$60; larger slots that can fit packages and heavily decorated slots[6] cost $100-$325. In addition to home improvement stores, online retailers like Amazon[7] sell mail slots in a wide variety of sizes and styles.
Wall-mount mailboxes cost $11-$550. Cost depends on style, size, material the box is made of and the manufacturer or designer name. Letter-size mailboxes made of plastic or inexpensive metal[8] cost $11-$50 and can be found at any home improvement store. Wall-mount mailboxes made from brass or bronze or finished with nickel[9] , can cost from $100-$300. Pounded copper mailboxes sold by specialty retailers such as Custom Home Accessories[10] cost up to $550.
The least expensive post-mount mailboxes, $15 -$200, are either plain or decorative metal mailboxes[11] that do not include the post or any mounting hardware, or all-in-one heavy-duty plastic boxes with post covers that are intended to slide over an already installed 4x4 post (not included). Decorative metal boxes with matching metal post kits can cost $150-$500 and a few top designer mailbox post kits can cost up to $775.
Architectural-style curbside mailboxes, sometimes called mail vaults, cost $600-$900. These are often made to look like small brick or stone structures[12] , though they can also be functional metal boxes[13] .
Most mailboxes are sold fully assembled. If any assembly is required, all hardware needed to assemble the mailbox should be included.
Post-mounted mailbox kits should include the assembled mailbox, the post and the hardware to attach the mailbox to the post. Hardware to secure the post in the ground may not be included.
Some mailboxes are sold with locks and keys included. Check the specifications to be sure a lock is included before purchasing.
Architectural style mailboxes usually include both a letter box and a large package vault. Most architectural mailboxes include locks for both the letter box and the package vault.
Additional costs:
Most post-mounted mailboxes not sold as part of a kit do not include posts. Posts and post kits cost $25-$250. Posts are sold at most of the same stores that sell post-mount mailboxes, including Ace Hardware[14] and Lowe's[15] .
Many solid-unit post mailboxes are designed to be installed on top of a 4x4 pounded into the ground. The 4x4 is not included with the mailbox; expect to pay $2-5, depending on location. 4x4s are sold at local lumberyards and home stores such as Lowe's[16] .
Hardware to install a mailbox is not often included with the mailbox. Installation hardware costs $7-$30. Ace Hardware[17] , Home Depot[18] and local hardware stores sell the screws, brackets and tools required.
A lock and key set costs $5-$13 and can be purchased at a hardware store such as Ace Hardware[19] .
Accessories such as address plaques, reflectors and decorative decals can all be added to mailboxes.
Installation is never included with mailboxes. To install an inexpensive post-mount mailbox, follow the instructions in this Lowe's how-to video.
Shopping for a residential mailbox:
Before purchasing or installing any mailbox, check with the local post office or the U.S. Postal Service to be sure the mailbox, including its post mount and location, meet U.S. Postal Service standards.
Wall-mount mailboxes should be installed in a location that is sheltered from rain. Post-mounted mailboxes installed near the street in snowy climates may need to be extra-sturdy to withstand thrown snow and debris from snowplows.
Depending on the security of the neighborhood and where the mailbox will be installed, consider whether to purchase a locking mailbox. Locking mailboxes come in almost every type, including post-mounted, wall-mounted and architectural styles.
