Quonset Hut Cost

How Much Does Quonset Hut Cost?

low costSmall-to-Medium Kit: $1,000-$15,000+average costMedium-to-Large Kit: $5,000-$35,000+high costFor Residential Use: $30,000-$400,000+ Total Costs

Lightweight and easy-to-erect, Quonset huts are corrugated steel buildings with distinctive rounded or arched roofs, creating sort of a long half-cylindrical shape; the side walls can be curved or straight. Sometimes called arch buildings, they are typically used for storage, or as a workshop, carport, or garage. With modifications to meet local building codes, a large, high-end Quonset hut can serve as a living space.

Typical costs:

  • Just a small-to-medium Quonset hut kit for storage, workshop or garage use (without foundation or installation costs) can cost $1,500-$15,000 or more, depending on size, accessories and delivery costs. Construction is often a do-it-yourself project, but hiring out the foundation and installation work can bring total costs to $3,000-$25,000 or more.
  • For example,BuildingsGuide.com[1] estimates a 10'x10' kit typically costs $1,500 for the base building, $300 for accessories and $120 for delivery, for a total of $1,920.
  • A 20'x20' hut is estimated at a total of $7,600, which includes $6,000 for the base building, $1,200 for accessories and $480 for delivery. Foundation and installation would be additional.
  • Just a medium-to-large Quonset hut kit for storage, workshop or garage use can cost $5,000-$35,000 or more, depending on size, accessories and location. A professional foundation and installation can bring total costs to $10,000-$50,000 or more, depending on what is included . BuidlingsGuide.com[2] estimates that a 144-square-foot single-car garage kit starts at $5,200; storage buildings kits are estimated to start at $12,600 for a small structure and $23,000 for large one (40'x60').
  • For residential use, complete installation of a large, livable Quonset hut can cost $30,000-$400,000 or more. For example, the April/May issue of Mother Earth News highlights a Pennsylvania couple[3] who spend about $35,000 for a 40'x40' Quonset hut on a concrete slab, with the work mostly do-it-yourself, although local labor was used to erect the shell and to build the wooden front wall, including installing windows. In 2011 the New York Daily News featured a couple in upstate New York[4] who paid about $286,000 to erect a 3,000-sqare-foot, two-story Quonset hut home.
  • Grading the site, pouring a slab foundation and floor, and (depending on the planned use of the building) installing utilities such as electricity, plumbing, water or sewage can cost $1,000-$30,000 or more, depending on size, local building codes and local rates.
What should be included:
  • Generally the kit provides the basic materials needed to build the structure plus construction plans, engineer-certified drawings and anchor bolt patterns (if needed). Construction is typically a simple process that can be done by general labor or as a do-it-yourself project.
  • The kit is typically delivered to the construction site, and SteelMaster Building Systems[5] estimates that unloading generally requires 3-4 people or using customer-provided equipment such as a forklift, front-end loader, backhoe or boom truck.
  • Erecting a metal building generally requires a building permit, and might be prohibited in some areas. Check with the local planning department for all requirements and zoning restrictions before buying a building. Most kit companies provide permit drawings.
Discounts:
  • If an order is cancelled or a model discontinued, companies like Future Buildings[6] or Steel Master Building Systems[7] offer them at a discount.
Shopping for quonset hut:
  • Ask about the type of materials, warranty and exactly what's included in the kit (plans, instructions, etc.). Request (and contact) references from satisfied customers.
  • Quonset hut manufacturers include Curvco Steel Buildings[8] , Future Buildings[9] , PowerBilt Steel Buildings[10] , Steel Factory Mfg.[11] and SteelMaster Building Systems[12] .
