Retractable awnings shade windows, doors, patios and decks just as stationary awnings do, but retractable awnings can be pulled in (retracted) either manually or by an electric motor. Retractable awnings are useful in areas where heavy snows can damage stationary awnings, and where sunlight can help warm indoor air in the wintertime. Most retractable awnings are made of heavy weather-resistant fabric, though occasionally a retractable awning might be made from lightweight aluminum.

Typical costs:

  • Pre-made manual retractable awnings cost $250-$1,000. Home improvement stores such as Home Depot[1] , Lowes[2] and Sears[3] sell manual retractable awnings in stock sizes from 4 feet to 24 feet wide and 27 inches up to 12 feet deep.
  • Pre-made motorized retractable awnings cost $1,000-$4,000. Lowes[4] , Home Depot[5] and Sears[6] all carry fully assembled, easy-to-install motorized retractable awnings.
  • Custom motorized retractable awnings cost $2,000-$11,500. The bigger the awning, the more expensive it will be. Extra-large (up to 40 feet wide) awnings intended primarily for commercial spaces cost the most.

What should be included:
  • A manual retractable awning should include the awning cover (usually fabric), frame, retracting mechanism and crank or cord for retracting the awning, assembly hardware, and installation brackets.
  • Most motorized retractable awnings include the motor and remote control for retraction, as well as the awning cover, frame, installation brackets, and a manual retraction crank (just in case). Be sure the awning includes the motor and remote before purchasing it and attempting to install it without assistance.
  • High-end motorized retractable awnings may include weather sensors and automatic switches that will retract the awning automatically in high winds or heavy rains, and extend the awning on bright sunny days.
Additional costs:
  • Side curtains that can be drawn to block more sun from the awning area cost $100-$200 and are sold as awning accessories at home improvement stores like Lowes[7] .
  • For information about the cost of cleaning awnings, read How Much Does Cleaning an Awning Cost.
  • Manual and simple motorized retractable awnings can be installed by a handyman or general contractor. For more information about finding a handyman, read How Much Does a Handyman Cost.
Discounts:
  • Manual retractable awnings cost significantly less than motorized retractable awnings, both in initial cost and for operation and maintenance. If the awning is not big or heavy, and will not be pulled in and out often, consider purchasing a manual retractable awning.
  • Premade retractable awnings often come fully assembled and ready for installation. DIY installation can save considerable money on retractable awnings. An article on HGTV lists all needed tools and describes the installation process in detail.
Shopping for a retractable awning:
  • Consider the size, location, style, and usage of the retractable awning. Determine whether manual (hand crank) retraction will work for this awning, or whether the weight and location of the awning make motorized retraction the better option.
  • Before purchasing a retractable awning, measure the window or patio area to be shaded. Be sure to include clearances (space above and to the sides) of the window--some awnings require almost a foot of clearance around the window. The Awntech manufacturer's website offers a measuring guide specific to their awning styles.
  • To learn about the basic styles of awnings, and which style works best over different sizes and styles of doors, windows and patios, see the Professional Awning Manufacturers Association [8] (PAMA) website.
  • The federal Department of Energy[9] provides information to help determine the best awning for energy-saving value.
