New Stamped Asphalt Driveway: $5-$12+ a Square Foot
Compared to concrete, pavers, bricks or stone, basic asphalt is a durable and relatively low-cost driveway paving material. It is also uniformly dark black and, to some people, dull and uninspired. To give it a more dramatic and upscale appearance, asphalt in a driveway, walkway or patio area can be stamped and colored to look like bricks or pavers.
Typical costs:
Stamping and painting a pattern on a top coat of an asphalt driveway (new or existing) can cost $3-$9 a square foot, or $900-$2,700 for 12'x25' or $3,600-$11,000 for 24'x50', depending on the size of the project; the exact pattern(s) and trim(s) chosen; the amount of pavement stamped; and the amount of prep work and resurfacing required.
This is for just stamping the top coat of asphalt; building a stamped asphalt driveway from scratch can cost $5-$12 a square foot, or about $1,500-$3,600 for 12'x25' and $3,600-$14,400 for 24'x50', depending on local rates, the site prep needed; and whether there are any slopes, curves or other challenges. For small jobs, there is often a minimum charge for getting the equipment and crew to the site, which can increase the per-square-foot price.
For example, the Narragansett Improvement Co.[1] in Providence, RI estimates that stamping a pattern on asphalt costs $6-$9 a square foot. Stamped Asphalt of Pittsburg[2] in Pennsylvania charges $3 a square foot for projects of 20,000 or more square feet (a two-lane driveway 24' wide and a quarter mile long is about 32,000 square feet); $4 per square foot for 10,000-20,000 square feet (a 12'-wide and quarter-mile-long drive is about 15,840 square feet); and gives individual estimates for projects less than 10,000 square feet.
Paving contractors typically do not charge by the square foot, but instead quote their total price for a specific project.
What should be included:
A heater is used to soften the asphalt surface, then a pattern made of wire, rope or plastic is pushed into the softened asphalt using a reversible plate compactor. The temperature of the asphalt is important; the asphalt should be soft enough to accept the pattern, but not so soft that the template sinks into the asphalt without any resistance. StreetPrint provides a video overview of the asphalt stamping process[3]
Although it is typically safe to drive and park on fresh asphalt after about 24-48 hours (or longer if the weather is hot), it can take up to 12 months for asphalt to completely harden and cure.
Additional costs:
Over time, the decorative surface may show signs of wear. According to Driveway Impressions[4] in Reston, VA, refreshing the appearance of stamped asphalt with a fresh coat of the surfacing product is relatively inexpensive, and significantly less than the original installation price.
Discounts:
Check whether neighbors also want a stamped asphalt driveway; some contractors charge less for multiple jobs in the same location
Shopping for stamped asphalt driveway:
Patented asphalt-stamping systems (templates and equipment) are manufactured by StreetPrint[5] and ThermOTrack[6] . Search by state for authorized StreetPrint installers[7] .
Decide on the desired colors and pattern. StreetPrint provides a photo gallery of residential driveway projects[8] .
Ask local construction contractors for recommendations for asphalt and paving contractors. Not all paving contractors do stamped asphalt, so call around and check.
Request and check references from previous customers (if possible, visit a previous project, to see how the driveway looks after use); and make sure the company is properly insured and licensed. If an old driveway needs to be torn out, make sure that is included in each estimate.
