Installing an aboveground pool can cost $1,500-$5,000; for in-ground estimated costs are $7,000-$16,000 for a vinyl-lined model, $15,000-$25,000 for a fiberglass shell and $17,000-$45,000 for concrete or gunite. However, custom designs can run prices much higher.
Aboveground pools are relatively easy to install by following the manufacturer's instructions; in-ground ones require excavating, plumbing and much more. This Old House[1] uses photos to show the steps used to create an $80,000 custom concrete in-ground pool.

12' x 28' Fiberglass pool with heater, 3'to 5' deep, entry stairs & handrail at shallow end, soaking bench/shelf in deep end, multi-color LED light in deep end, and decorative contrasting tile trim along steps and bench. A concrete apron 3' wide around perimeter of pool and 6' patio area was included. Also purchased a heavy duty mesh safety cover for winter but wish I'd opted for the cheaper cover. Had the pool closed by professionals every year. When it was time to re-open the pool, the water was black as coffee because the mesh allowed debris that accumulated on the cover throughout the winter to decay and gradually filter through the mesh into the water (so I was told by the professionals). Took massive amounts of chlorine to clear it up. The first year it was two weeks to get back to clear water, but afterwards we knew how to treat it and within just a few days we had crystal clear water. I would recommend a fiberglass pool to anyone. Regular maintenance is a breeze.
Also had it in closed with a glass sun room including a fireplace and retractable roof the custom building was not included in the price I posted it does include 3 waterfalls a cave/ grotto and a built in spa And heating
Custom pool with zero entry shallow end, 3 foot drop off to deep end. Attached hot tub with water fall over shale stones into deep end. Aluminum and screen enclosure with paver deck. Added a small outdoor kitchen.
Had installed over a previous pool area. Was charged for leveling, although I didn't think it needed it. Electric was already installed. Do not skimp on care. Very hard to return to swimming condition. Do not allow to completely drain or liner will shrink and be unuseable. No deck so stairs was interesting. Otherwise cost effective and easy to care for.
