How Much Does an Exterior Door Cost?

low costLow: $200-$700average costMedium: $400-$3,000+high costHigh: $3,000-$12,000+

Door prices vary far more than for most home improvement purchases, and consumers may be quoted widely different prices for the same brand and model door from different retailers. This price variation can be significant, regardless of manufacturer.

Typical costs:

  • A plain front entry door starts at about $50-$250, depending on size and materials, or $200-$700 with installation. More decorative and durable mid-range front doors can cost $200-$2,000, or $400-$3,000 with installation. A deluxe front door with double doors opening to the center and/or glass side panels and an overhead transom as well as decorative art glass and other stylish touches can cost $2,000-$8,000 for just the door materials, or $3,000-$12,000 or more with installation.
  • Sliding glass doors (one fixed panel, one sliding; sometimes called gliding or bypass doors) start at about $300-$800 for a basic 5'-6' wide set, or $600-$2,000 with installation. More durable, energy efficient or decorative sliding glass doors 5'-8' wide can cost $1,000-$4,000, or $1,500-$5,000 or more with installation.
  • A standard set of French doors (typically two doors that open to the center for a wide opening, with columns of small windows the full length of the doors) start at about $300 -$800 or $600 -$1,200 with installation. But expect to pay $1,000-$3,000 or more for a set of two mid- to high-end French doors that are more durable, decorative and/or energy-efficient, or $1,500-$4,500 or more with installation, depending on the age of the house, type of exterior and walls, and the complexity of the project.
  • A hinged patio door (typically with a single large pane of glass, sometimes with an overlay creating the look of multiple panes of glass) starts at about $400-$900 but can cost $1,000-$4,000 or more depending on size, materials, style and options like built-in blinds, more energy-efficient glass or side panels of fixed glass. With installation these can cost $1,000-$5,500 or more.
  • Costs double for impact-resistant patio doors (sliding, French or hinged) that withstand hurricane-force winds. Mike Davidson Construction in Florida estimates that installing a 9' impact-resistant sliding glass door[1] costs about $3,700, compared to $1,800 for standard tempered glass.

What should be included:
  • A company representative will typically need to inspect and measure the site before estimating installation costs. If one company has already measured, others may be willing to give a rough estimate based on those numbers, but would likely need to take their own measurements before giving a firm bid.
  • Most new doors come as pre-hung units; the old frame is removed and then the new one is installed. Depending on the size of the door, installation often requires more than one worker to help lift and hold the new door in place. A Lowe's video explains how to install a single entry door and an AskTheBuilder.com video shows how to install a large entry door[2] with fixed glass side panels.
  • Exterior doors can be inswing, outswing, left-handed, right-handed and more; Lowe's provides an overview of exterior doors[3] .
Additional costs:
  • If the flooring, siding, deck or interior trim surrounding the existing door needs repairing because of water damage, dry rot or other problems, or if the opening is uneven because the house has settled, repairs can cost $50-$1,000 or more, depending on the extent of the damage.
  • If not included, screen doors can cost an extra $35-$1,100 or more, depending on size, style and quality of materials.
Shopping for an exterior door:
  • Consumer Reports explains that wood and fiberglass exterior doors may be more durable than steel. Canadian retailer Rona offers a detailed planning guide for selecting a door, and Home Depot provides a door selector tool[4] for the different types of doors available.
  • Accurate installation estimates can only be done on-site, as measurements need to be precise and the condition of the existing frame and surrounding wall needs to be evaluated. A relatively low in-store quote may increase significantly based on actual circumstances.
  • Exterior doors are available at local lumber yards; home improvement centers like Home Depot[5] and Lowe's[6] ; or search for a local door and window dealer through the American Window and Door Institute[7] .
  • If hiring an installer, verify that the company is properly insured, bonded and licensed; ask for and check references.

My daughter paid for the door but my husband had to take out all the wood around and make lots of adjustments. He had to cut the door to make it smaller and then re cut to make it fit. He had to put it in a specific way in order not to take off the porch. Two 12 hour days plus. What would the labor have cost to have a door company do this.

Our door was kicked in so we needed to replace. We had a new wood door installed, with a peep hole, new door knob, rekeyed 5 locks and put two steel plates on doors (back and front). They did excellent work but it took them 5 hours worth of labor.

With my being very involved in the carpentry business, I can give you a fairly accurate formula for calculating labor expense estimates. rnTotal cost of material multiplied by 2, plus 15% of that figure... actual prices will vary lower or higher.

Three exterior doors
Amount: $4,025.00
Posted by: Mozer in Canton, MI.Posted: February 23rd, 2011 08:02AM
Brand: Hanson'sType of Door:
I have not installed my doors yet. I will not be using Hanson's because it cost too much. I have to replace the front door (storm door and doorjamb/threshold are also included), the back garage door (entry door, leads out to backyard), and replace a plain, thin door between attached garage and house with a fire door.
I chose plain steel doors for garage, and a paneled steel door with a small rectangular window for the front. Storm door was plain, with a sliding window and screen instead of one where I'd have to take out one to put in the other.
All steel doors chosen were among the cheapest in the line, though I chose a color for the front door (outside).
I had Hanson's come out because I entered some sweepstakes for $50,000 worth of work, and as soon as they got my phone number they used it, as I expected. They offered a free estimate, I had purchased a foreclosure that needed work, so I said "why not?"
The presentation that the rep shows explains the warranties and guarantees (lifetime), etc. as well as history of the company. I am sure that they do a good job. Before giving our quote, the rep asked me how much I thought the work would cost. I estimated between $1200-$1700, based on my knowledge of the cost of doors from looking around at Home Depot. He then wrote "$4,725.00" on a piece of paper, but said he could go as low as $4,025. I felt bad that he even bothered to measure, etc., because that was so far out of our price range. So, anyway, a carpenter friend of my father-in-law's will install the doors that we buy at Lowe's or Home Depot or something. I will let you know on final costs, but based on what I read above, low end is $1100 and hi end is about $1700, including installation but not including a new storm door. I'll let you know how it goes.

French Doors
Amount: $1,950.00
Posted by: a user in Las Vegas, NV.Posted: August 14th, 2010 12:08AM
Brand: Therma TruType of Door:
I replaced an old aluminum sliding door with a out swing French door. I selected the Therma-tru smooth star with low-e glass. It was a standard 6x6'8" opening but I had some difficulty finding the right size of french door to order. The installers removed my sliding glass door, leveled the frame, installed the french door and placed some very large 6" trim inside and out, and installed the hardware. I provided the hardware and painted door and trim myself. I might have saved $100-200 by going with another company but I stuck with the same company who installed my windows because the arrive on time and do top quality work.
