Range from less than $1/square foot for do-it-yourself panels from a building supply store to $2-$7 or more if installed by a contractor. For an 1,800-square-foot exterior (50' long, 40' wide and 10' tall'), that's $3,600 to $12,600 and up for professionally hung vinyl. Quality, thickness and insulation all matter, and the cheapest bid is not always best.
Estimates are based on the exterior square feet of your home. For example, if your home was 10' tall, 40' long and 30' wide, it could be a 1,200 square foot home with 10*(40+40+30+30)=1,400 exterior square feet, which could take roughly 14 10'x10' squares of vinyl.
What should be included:
Vinyl siding ranges from .035 to .055 inches thick, with most premium brands at .040 to .048 inches. Some have a layer of insulation. Thinner siding may sag, crack when hit or tear loose in high winds. Read the warranty to figure out how a product will do in local weather.
Color is added during manufacture; vinyl doesn't need painting but should be washed periodically. Since dark colors absorb heat, vinyl siding usually comes in lighter tones.
Proper installation is crucial and there are brand-specific instructions, which may be beyond a home handyman's skills. This Old House gives an overview.
Tip: On an older home, check for zoning restrictions against covering historic or architectural details.
Some people have environmental concerns about polyvinyl chloride plastic resin; Architecture.About.com gives pros and cons.
Additional costs:
Trim, crown moldings, corner boards and soffits (covering the gap between the house and gutters) add to the bottom line and should be clearly included in any estimate.
If you already have siding, it will need to be removed, which can cost $1,000-$3,000 to remove.
Shopping for vinyl siding:
Two of the top manufacturers are CertainTeed and Crane. The Crane Website can help you locate a contractor near you who can install their siding.
Ask if a contractor is certified by a particular manufacturer or by the Vinyl Siding Institute; and if the company is licensed, bonded and its staff insured. Check with the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed.
Tip: Find vinyl siding projects in your area. After the job is done, knock on the door, compliment the homeowners and ask how the process went and the names of the contractor and manufacturer.
The written contract should include a final price for the whole project, materials to be used, dates within which the project will be done and the manufacturer's warranty.
Met with the salesperson. Demonstrated what appears to be excellent products and installation, which includes high end vinyl, greenguard raindrop moisture barrier, foam backing, trim, soffitts, gutters, tear off and removal. The price offered after discounts is $48,545 for approx. 2400 sq ft. Agreeing that this may be premium service, it still sounds high to me. Thoughts?
Estimated price includes material and labor. In addition to siding, price includes 235 linear feet of soffit, 2 new gable vents, and build outs for 13 windows. Contractor to cover old existing Masonite siding with styrofoam insulation before installing vinyl siding. How does this estimate compare?
Based on all the post listed, the calculated mean pricing for vinyl siding should run approximately $8.04 per square foot for labor and material with a reputable contractor. Some areas of the country will be less, and some areas might be more. Make sure your contractor is licensed, insured, and possible bonded. Check their references and ask to see pictures of past work and call past clients to get some feedback. Don't always go with the low-ball contractor because they might not be reputable. As a client, you must perform you do diligence in selecting the right contractor. A good contractor will provide you with as much information as you request so DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK for as much information as you need to make you feel comfortable that you are getting the best deal for your money while also receiving a good service. After all....you home is most of our largest investments in a lifetime, so you need to protect your investment. Good luck to you all!!!
The Home Depot gave me this price to install a Crane Cedar Shake siding of a Dark Coastal blue over my existing siding. This price also includes soffit, fascia, trimming around all of my windows and doors,Two Porch Ceilings, and siding my chimney. The price for the Crane Board insulated product with the same options was about $33,350. This includes a life of the home warranty backed by Home Depot. Is this a good price?
Have had range in pricing from 1200-1600 for 386sq.ft. of siding, 1 sofit, facia, and two rake edges on a small shed dormer. 3rd number came in at $750 including material. is the number too low. The guys is insured and listed in all the local yellowpages, online, etc.
i had the work done-looks great. now,i want to buy 6 squares of a like color and quality and 600 sq ft of 3/4" foam insulation board. i want to install it on a shed myself. can anyone tell me where i can buy and approximately the cost. thx
My exterior as measured by me is 1610 NET sq ft, and 1960 gross sq foot. So far I've gotten two estimates and they have been quite different. Estimates are for removal/disposal of old aluminum siding, replaced with 3/8 foam/tyvek, new certainteed double 5" monogram clapboard. First estimate was between 9-10k, and installer based it off 19 square. Second estimate is for 6200. I have two other companies coming this week to throw their hats in the ring. First installer does top notch work, I've looked at many of his jobs. Second one I haven't seen any of his work yet, and know much less about him. The two coming this week are both well regarding local companies specializing in siding/windows. There's a lot of information you can get online about siding. If you take a little bit of time and educate yourself, your much less likely to get hosed. If it seems to good to be true it probably is, and if it seems odd, move on to the next guy. You can research the different siding online as well, all siding is not created equal. I had one company that wouldn't do an estimate without me agreeing to have my wife present for their sales pitch...what a joke.
I have some small hail damage on my home.Basically two quarter size holes and a 5 inch crack. My insurance company gave us only 1,000 for the vinyl. now my question is this. Is his estimate for replacing only each piece, which according to this sight can't be done without re-doing the whole side of the house. Not to mention the price for taking down the old siding.Or does the insurance company not have to pay for the labor and taking down the old? Comparing this to all these other quotes on here something looks wrong. Could someone reply please with your experience in this type of situation? It would be most appreciated! Thanks
Went with Home Depot for assurance which did not happen. Had crane 7 installed with aluminum coil wrap on porch beams and doors, windows 6 months ago. Installed trim on top of PT wood now they have to redo all trim. What a joke.
I am still researching what I want to put on my home and stopped to read some of these articles. I see mostly ppl saying siding and quotes and one comment saying get as many quotes as possible. What I dont see is anyont talking about the quality of the siding or companies that are giving the quotes. If all you want is a cheap price I know a guy that will slap it up for a couple cases of beer. he'll drink the whole time he's installing it too. what you should be looking for is the quality of the material. thickness for example. i'm looking for a nice beaded siding I think. I will pay a little more but its worth it. when youre getting as many quotes as possible what is your determining factor to who you will use. cheapest price? ask the right questions such as how long have you been in business. what is your insurance policy. are your workers covered by your insurance. if someone falls off a ladder is my homeowners insruance going to have to pick up the bill. will an accident come out of my pocket. youre going to get what you pay for. if you go cheap youre going to get cheap. have fun tracking down your siding after the next heavy wind. good luck finding the fly by night contractor that installed it to come back out and do repairs. if you pay for quality you'll get it
Had aluminum siding removed and disposed of, house wrapped in Typar (seams taped). Replaced with Mastic Quest double 5" .046". 2 rake boards recovered in aluminim trim coil. All accessory blocks/trim pieces/gable vents replaced w/ mastic. 4 pairs of new vinyl shutters installed. Price included permit which contractor obtained. I got 5 estimates, this was tied for second highest cost, but felt most comfortable with this contractor. Lowest quote was 3k cheaper, Contractor is fully licensed and insured, provided copies of his license and insurance, and several references. Checked out his work before signing the contract. Contractor has Mastic "Master Elite" status. 3 man Crew was on the job at 7:15 each day worked hard through 3 and only broke for lunch. Owner's son was foreman, owner was on site two of the 7 days. Very professional operation.

Is there much price variation in the styles of CertainTeed Cedar Shake siding, i.e., we want the rough/rustic look, darker gray. The quote was given with us semi-describing but didn't know if there was a large difference in that and the even cut cedar shake look.
I have installed vinyl siding/exterior trim for 15 years. I have also installed windows for 15 years. For vinyl siding with a 1/4 in foam insulation with materials a fair price is $350.00 per square. Everyone gets caught up in the mil of the siding and worries about that, but remember we are talking about fractions of a millimeter. Bigger companies use this ploy as a way to pitch exclusivity on there product and charge you $800.00 to 1000.00 a square. For covering your facia and installing new soffit, and covering rake boards, a fair price is rn$10.00 a foot. To cover the trim on existing windows with material $100.00 a piece is not out of line. Replacement windows 350-450 is not out of line. For those pricing Crane siding with the insulation on the back be prepared to pay dearly. the material is expensive and it is a pain in the rear to install. Unless you live in Antarctica I dont see the need in it. people tend to want to go overboard on the insulation on their homes and seal them tightly. Your home needs to breathe! As for the 1/4 inch backer board that companies pitch you, we installers call it wall flattener, because mainly thats what it is ( makes a really nice job). It has an r value of 1. You should already have insulation in your home, and if your house is old and doesnt then spend some money to get an insulation contractor to blow insulation in your walls. Dont put too much stock in the insulation that is installed with vinyl siding. Finally, the reason everyones prices are all over the place is because you have smaller contractors and large corporations. The large corporations have salesman to pay, marketers to pay, finance people to pay, so they pitch you and try to convince you how much better their product is. Therefor their price is much higher. I would pay more attention to the wuality of the install rather than the product. After all its just vinyl siding. I hope I helped everyone. Thanks.
Just received this quote yesterday, I was in shock, my home needs only on the back side of the house siding, the soffits and four windows and two doors wrapped. The guy who gave estimate told me one board, where my pergola is attached to, they would not even put siding on it "because it is to labor intensive" I told him I do not want all new siding and leave a stretch of 18 feet by 8 inches with the old stuff. the quote was from a large national company that starts with a S....

IN 2008 had hail damage and siding done by Cheap Contractor that went out of business. Now it is time to redo as old Vinyl siding rippled and torn Plus no sheeting on walls.
Work to be done:
remove old siding install 7/16 sheeting and shrink wrap & install acrylic composite siding & wrap all windows. Warranty life of house transferable . If you want something done right you get what you pay for. I did my research and contractor is solid.this is my 3rd job with them. about 50 thousand all total spend never anything gone wrong and when I had small issue they were here johnny on the spot at no charge.I work Nuclear and know when it has to be right, always do it right the first time! Hope it helps you before you make same mistake I made in 2008.
PS I was not there the first time but I sure I'm here this time to oversee what I'm paying for.
I have had three contractors give me quotes on this job which range from 22K - 9K all using the same product. I was expecting to come in at under 7.5K tops. At these prices I can buy Hardie board and do it myself.
What about scrap worth of Aluminum Siding removed?
Amount: $0.00

I have not seen mentioned that if the siding that is removed is aluminum siding, it can have a value of $1000 or more as scrap. Should this be something that should be deducted from the overall cost by the contractor?
