Uncontrolled water can cause structural damage to a home's walls or foundation. Rain gutters (also called eaves troughs or guttering) provide an important channel to collect water from the roof and divert it away from the foundation or basement.
Typical costs:
The average residential home has anywhere from 120 to 250 feet of rain gutters, depending on the number of stories and the amount of roof line. (Sprawling single-story homes have more roof edges and therefore more feet of rain gutters than more-compact two- or three-story houses.)
Expect to pay around $3-$5 a lineal foot to have someone install vinyl (PVC) gutters, or about $360-$600 for 120 feet and $750-$1,250 for 250 feet. Vinyl gutters are a fairly simple do-it-yourself project; material alone run about $50-$100 for 120 feet and $90-$180 for 250 feet. Vinyl gutters maintain their color well, are flexible and dent-resistant and don't rust or corrode but they do get brittle with age and extreme cold.
Having aluminum gutters installed averages about $4-$9 a foot plus downspouts at $5-$8 each, or $500-$1,200 for 120 feet and $1,050-$2,400 for 250 feet. Do-it-yourself materials average $350-$500 for 120 feet and $450-$850 for 250 feet. Aluminum is fairly easy to maintain but it dents more easily than other gutter materials and expands (moves due to temperature changes) significantly more than other metals.
Mainly used in restoration projects, wood gutters are heavy to install and cost about $12-$20 a foot, depending on the type of wood used, or $1,450-$2,400 for 120 feet and $3,000-$5,000 or more for 250 lineal feet.
Galvanized steel gutters are about $4-$8 installed, for a total cost around $500-$1,000 for 120 feet and $1,000-$2,000 for 250 feet. Steel runs $8-$10 a foot, or $960-$1,200 for 120 feet and $2,000-$2,500 for 240 feet. Stainless steel gutters--which are strong, rust-free and keep a high sheen for years--average $20 a foot, or $2,400 for 120 feet and $5,000 for 250 feet.
Copper gutters are low maintenance and do not rust; they tend to be a custom project at a $15-$25 a foot or $1,800-$3,000 for 120 feet and $3,750-$6,250 for 250 feet. Copper develops a patina as it ages.
Generally a contractor will remove the old gutters and downspouts and install new ones. The gutters must be slightly sloped so the water will flow into the downspouts.
The two main types of gutter systems are sectional and seamless; sectional gutters are easier to install and more likely to be a do-it-yourself project, but are more prone to developing leaks. Usually seamless gutters are professionally installed.BobVila.com[1] provides a quick overview of the different types of gutters. DoItYourself.com[2] gives do-it-yourself instructions for vinyl rain gutters.
Additional costs:
Hauling away old gutters and downspouts can add $40-$100 to the total cost; check to see if this is included in a project estimate.
Downspouts can be replaced by decorative Japanese-style rain chains[3] which start around $20-$50 for basic models and can run $50-$200 or more.

Installing gutters is an inexpensive start-up business, so ask contractors about their training and experience -- make sure they're not new to the field. Request and verify references from satisfied customers. Get several estimates, and be sure the quotes are for the same type and quality of materials.

Wood fascia, 5 downspouts, 3 Mitre, with drip edge, no clips, no screens, all 4 sides needed gutter as roof is pyramid shaped. Color matched house. Completed in about 4 hours. Steves Seamless Raingutters in Riverside.
Over paid for service. And now the gutters drip and leak. Leaf Filter says it's my roof. But the old gutters did not drip or leak. Just old and falling down. Messed up something when installed. Now I have leaking and dripping I didn't have before.
We don’t know if we’ve been taken advantage of or not but sure feel like it. We were fine with the original estimate of $4850. Expensive, but the company comes highly recommended. It was pointed out by the installers that the company did not include a 30 foot gutter that was in bad condition. We asked for a price and we were told it would be an additional $1,000, which was ridiculous. I questioned it and he stated that he’d added wrong and it would be $700. We agreed but only because the house was already 3/4 finished with white aluminum Leaf Guard. 4 downspouts and a link-up to our underground drainage system (which a drainage company had previously installed. I’m reading all the other comments on this page and people stating that $1,000, $ 2,000 etc are too expensive and I’m getting annoyed thinking we were REALLY screwed... pun intended!
Two story home. Proposed: a little over 500 linear ft of aluminum color match seamless gutters, eight downspouts, poly baked on color finish. For the two story work, the 500+ ft, number of downspouts, and contractor is easy to work with, I believe I am going to accept this proposal and get the job done.
Whenever a company sends an 'estimator' to look at job, realize he will have to be paid, in addition to, the cost of material and labor. If an estimator comes to your home, be cool and ask in passing, "do you install the gutters yourself?" If he says no, he is an extra 10+/-% to the bill. No matter who comes, who they represent, realize subcontractor sales companies, are always looking for a foot in your door, on behalf of your friendly, local materials dealer, home improvement or retail store, or even power/utility companies. As seen in the above comments, jobs for TheHomeDepot, Sears, Power Cos, etc, are always out of sight...you pay much more. Good luck!
I laughed the guy out of my house! Are you kidding me? Just by complaining about the price, guy came down to $8100. I asked him twice to leave. He called someone. Took another $300 of of the price. I told him "this is the third time I have asked you to leave. Get out of that chair and hit the door or I am calling the police. You are trying to rob me." I did not get the free gift certificate for getting an estimate. Was not offered the restaurant card. Included charges for hauling old gutters off even after i told him we wanted to recycle the old gutters. Guy even had the color wrong...thought our gutters were white and they are clearly almond. Should note that nothing is wrong with our current gutters other than they need painting. Our facia is aluminum wrapped and leaf guard guy tried to sell me on the non-fact that there is rotting behind the aluminum wrapping. I asked "How can you tell that when you haven't removed any of the wrapping but you have a charge of $1100.00 to replace.Scam
Got anew roof done, they didn't cover my house so it's black mark everywhere , the house is tan color so it's look so dirty now, not so happy and they quote for regular aluminum gutter with 4 down spouts st $5000, even I want a new gutter. I think I should shop for a new company to do it.

We just received a quote from the LeafGuard rep for $8,500.00 to replace all of the gutters on a tiny 1950's home (minus 30ft in the front of the house where we're adding a porch). He said average cost was $9-11K. I don't know who in their right mind would purchase these at this ridiculous price. That's more than I spent on our roof and siding combined! We'll be headed to Home Depot this weekend to do it ourselves for about $200.
My quote is for 42 feet of eaves trough installed plus two downspouts plus one inside box mitre and 200 feet of leaf guard. This Mennonite contractor came highly recommended by a colleague who watched him install gutters at half the price two other local contractors quoted him. I did not bother to get a second estimate.
I couldn't find many places that listed the true cost of the name-brand Englert Leaf Guard Gutter so hopefully my cost will help those considering it. The total cost of $5948 also included four (4) downspouts with drain guards (at $134 each) that will catch any debris in the gutter before it hits my underground drainage pipes. By my math I'm paying $41.31/ft... which is a shock to the system. To his credit, the salesman seemed very educated and knew his product versus the competition. There was an offer of 6% if you paid cash. The systems is supposed to be warrantied for the life of the home and the only catch was that if you sell the home, the new owner must notify Leaf Guard within 30 days of purchase or the warranty will be void.
After a severe hail damage storm in Aurora Colorado, a certain contractor started targeting unsuspecting home owners. The contractor made promises and agreements then when the project was finished the contractor increased his overhead and profit to claim my entire insurance check. The gutters and downspouts Quantity is a total of 95 LF. The Unit Cost is $5.62. The contractor gave me an estimate cost of $533.90. When the project was completed the contractor sent me a bill for: $650.19. Please tell me if the contractor is charging me too much. Thank you. Kim
Linear Feet of Gutters: 115\' and lear guard grids.
Material: 6" seamless aluminum
I got an estimate today from a highly recommended gutter guy that makes his own gutters in his shop. This is with a leaf guard that he doesn't make, that he purchases. He says that these gutters are screwed in not installed the old way with the long nail and latch. This is also with 3 downspouts. The removal and disposal of old gutters are included. He said he will remove old gutters so I could paint or do any touch ups on the fascia before installing the new gutters. When he gave me the price my knee's got weak. This is an easy install on a bottom story home with nothing blocking the area to work. I think this price is entirely too high.
I JUST GOT A QUOTE OF $840.00 FOR 20 FEET OF GUTTERS, 2 DOWNSPOUNTS AND 1 ELBOW. THIS WAS FROM HOMEDEPOT AND THEY TOLD ME THIS WAS ALSO WITH A $200. DISCOUNT.I SEE WHERE PEOPLE HAVE GOTTEN 200 FEET OF GUTTER FOR THAT PRICE. SURE SOUNDS LIKE THEY WERE TRYING TO TAKE ME.
Just got a quote from Unique Windows, Doors, Gutters... $12 060.00. 1 level home 226 ft gutters and 6 downspouts. I got on line and found that I could buy the materials myself for about $1000.00. What a RIP OFF!
Just got this bid tonight after the Sears Home services rep stayed at my house for 5 hours. I agreed to it to get the appointment ended. After reading other posts I think this price is too high for this partial gutter replacement job. The bid has no description of materials or the exact linear feet. He was giving bids on siding, windows and doors and this was the lowest priced item. After 3 hours I said he needed to finish up and he still stayed an additional 2 hours preparing computer forms for me to sign electronically. I think I will use my 3 day right to cancel (5 or more days in some other states) and get a couple more bids that are more detailed. The information others have shared was very helpful. Thanks!
