A vinyl liner swimming pool has the interior lined with what is basically a vinyl bag that holds the water without leaking. Edwards Pools in Ohio provides an overview of vinyl liner in-ground pools[1] and above ground pools[2] .
Typical costs:
Replacing a vinyl liner in an in-ground swimming pool typically costs $700-$1,500 for just the liner, depending on the size and shape of the pool, the thickness (20-30 mil, but typically 28 mil) of the liner and any special colors or designs on the liner. Vinyl pool liners can mimic the look of pebbles, mosaic tiles or other textures. For example, a 20'x40' Rectangular In-ground Pool Liner[3] with 28-mil thickness on the walls and a 20-mil floor with a designer pattern costs $1,065 (plus shipping) from Inyo Pools in Florida.
Installation labor for an in-ground liner adds $1,000-$2,500 or more, depending on the condition of the walls and subfloor, and the extent of needed repairs. Total cost, labor and materials, for replacing an in-ground swimming pool liner is typically $2,000-$5,000.
A vinyl liner for an above ground pool can cost $150-$600, depending on the size and style of the swimming pool, plus any special colors, patterns or textures in the liner. For example, a 20' Round and 4' High 20 gauge Vinyl Liner[4] with a pebble pattern on the bottom costs about $265 from Inyo Pools in Florida.
Installation labor to replace an above ground pool liner can cost $200-$800 or more, depending on local rates and the size and shape of the pool. For example, Edwards Pools[5] in Ohio estimates its labor charges for replacing an above ground pool liner vary from $400 for an 18' round pool to $700 for a 18'x33' oval. Total costs for replacing an above ground pool liner can be $400-$1,500 or more, depending on size and shape and whether any repairs are needed to the coving, walls or floor.
Replacing an in-ground vinyl pool liner typically takes less than a full day. How long it takes to refill the pool depends on the water source; in arid regions the pool owner may have water trucked in, so the pool is refilled by the next day. The weight of the water is what holds the liner in place, so the pool should not be left empty any longer than strictly necessary. Often the pool owner will be asked to drain the pool the day before or even a few hours before the contractor is scheduled to replace the liner.
For an in-ground pool, typically the old liner is cut out and removed; the existing concrete subfloor is patched, smoothed and leveled as needed (if the subfloor is sand, any contaminated sand is replaced and the sand troweled smooth); any coving along the bottom edge, side foam or bottom pad under the liner is inspected to see if it needs replacing; and then the new liner is installed, using vacuums as the liner is carefully smoothed into place. Liners are designed to fit tightly into the shape of the pool. If the new liner is installed improperly, there may be wrinkles or other imperfections, or even rips or tears. Edwards Pools in Ohio provides photo illustrations[6] of the in-ground pool liner replacement process.
To replace an above ground pool liner, the pool needs to be drained and the old liner removed, but it's not as difficult to replace an above ground liner as an in-ground liner. However, it still must be done carefully and properly to avoid damaging the liner. Inyo Pools in Florida explains how to install an above ground pool liner[7] .

Replaced 10 year old worn out dis colored vinyl liner with 28 mm new for our 30 year old kidney shaped pool with paradise bottom. Total estimate given as 5000 max, but ended up with 6350.
Bought a Foxx pool in 1986. First liner lasted 10 years, maybe. very thin vinyl. I replaced it myself (I was young). Thought I got a thick liner and it lasted about 10 years. Got another replacement liner, thickest I could get. It lasted until now when the pool lost 4' of water overnight and keeps dropping. I think the pool cleaner mustg have rubbed a hole near the drain) Looks like I'm about to replace it for the last time with the thickest I can get. I'm 67 and it isn't that hard, just gonna be painful after it's over.
