Uncontrolled water can cause structural damage to a home's walls or foundation. Rain gutters (also called eaves troughs or guttering) provide an important channel to collect water from the roof and divert it away from the foundation or basement.
Typical costs:
The average residential home has anywhere from 120 to 250 feet of rain gutters, depending on the number of stories and the amount of roof line. (Sprawling single-story homes have more roof edges and therefore more feet of rain gutters than more-compact two- or three-story houses.)
Expect to pay around $3-$5 a lineal foot to have someone install vinyl (PVC) gutters, or about $360-$600 for 120 feet and $750-$1,250 for 250 feet. Vinyl gutters are a fairly simple do-it-yourself project; material alone run about $50-$100 for 120 feet and $90-$180 for 250 feet. Vinyl gutters maintain their color well, are flexible and dent-resistant and don't rust or corrode but they do get brittle with age and extreme cold.
Having aluminum gutters installed averages about $4-$9 a foot plus downspouts at $5-$8 each, or $500-$1,200 for 120 feet and $1,050-$2,400 for 250 feet. Do-it-yourself materials average $350-$500 for 120 feet and $450-$850 for 250 feet. Aluminum is fairly easy to maintain but it dents more easily than other gutter materials and expands (moves due to temperature changes) significantly more than other metals.
Mainly used in restoration projects, wood gutters are heavy to install and cost about $12-$20 a foot, depending on the type of wood used, or $1,450-$2,400 for 120 feet and $3,000-$5,000 or more for 250 lineal feet.
Galvanized steel gutters are about $4-$8 installed, for a total cost around $500-$1,000 for 120 feet and $1,000-$2,000 for 250 feet. Steel runs $8-$10 a foot, or $960-$1,200 for 120 feet and $2,000-$2,500 for 240 feet. Stainless steel gutters--which are strong, rust-free and keep a high sheen for years--average $20 a foot, or $2,400 for 120 feet and $5,000 for 250 feet.
Copper gutters are low maintenance and do not rust; they tend to be a custom project at a $15-$25 a foot or $1,800-$3,000 for 120 feet and $3,750-$6,250 for 250 feet. Copper develops a patina as it ages.
What should be included:
Generally a contractor will remove the old gutters and downspouts and install new ones. The gutters must be slightly sloped so the water will flow into the downspouts.
The two main types of gutter systems are sectional and seamless; sectional gutters are easier to install and more likely to be a do-it-yourself project, but are more prone to developing leaks. Usually seamless gutters are professionally installed.BobVila.com provides a quick overview of the different types of gutters. DoItYourself.com gives do-it-yourself instructions for vinyl rain gutters.
Additional costs:
Hauling away old gutters and downspouts can add $40-$100 to the total cost; check to see if this is included in a project estimate.
Downspouts can be replaced by decorative Japanese-style rain chains which start around $20-$50 for basic models and can run $50-$200 or more.
Discounts:
Ask neighbors if they also want new rain gutters, and see if you can get a discount for several nearby projects.
Shopping for gutters:
Installing gutters is an inexpensive start-up business, so ask contractors about their training and experience -- make sure they're not new to the field. Request and verify references from satisfied customers, and check for complaints at the Better Business Bureau. Get several estimates, and be sure the quotes are for the same type and quality of materials.
I have been installing raingutters for about 7 years and just recently invested in a gutter machine in order to start my own business. I have torn down multiple pre-existing gutter jobs that were made of either steel or vinyl. I wouldnt recommend using these materials as they will either rust and rot, or warp and crack. Keep in mind when purchasing gutters that it is a somewhat seasonal trade, so when the rainy season comes and the product is in demand, companies will charge up to double the cost as what you might pay in the summer. I sometimes bid my gutters as low as $3 per foot in the summer.
My house is out in the country, was very hard to get a gutter company to come look at the job. Had one company (Gutters & Covers) promise 5 or 6 times to show up but never did. Finally got North Texas Seamless to make the trip. They jumped right on the project and showed up as promised.
Was able to find a contractor do the above mentioned guttering plus 5 downspouts for the price above. Checked out their work prior to hiring them and it looked really good.

Estimate for 260' of gutter, with 12 outlets, 5 miters, and 16 flat end caps. Discounted 10% for cash, from 11,940. I don't know if that's a good price or not.
This was for the "Rain Pro" brand with 3x4 downspouts. They were the lowest price out of the 4 companies we got estimates from. Cost was higher than normal due to a sloped fascia requiring the gutters to be hanged from the roof.
Quite pricey, but this is the quote I got. Lifetime guarantee from leaks in corners or clogged gutters. They are coated with baked on enamel or something. I guess its worth it if I dont have to risk life and limb climbing ladders each year to clean gutters. Supposedly 25,000 homes in Chicago metro have these installed.
Price included removal of old gutters (free), 130' of 6" seamless aluminum white gutters ($4.50 per foot) with black leafree gutter guards($5.95 per foot) and 92' of 3x4 aluminum downspouts-6 downspouts of varying lengths($3.95 per foot). Comes with a 10 year warranty on gutters and downspouts, and if they ever clog or any animals get in them they will come out and clean them. Richard (owner) was wonderful! Zero pressure when he came out to give the estimate. He gave us a print out of all of our options and told us to give him a call if we decided to go with his company. So glad we did! They were extremely nice, professional, fast, and clean! Can't recommend them enough!! Thank you Leaf Magic Gutters! It looks great!

Linear Feet of Gutters: 50
Material: Aluminum
Our new home had a small area around the back patio that did not have gutters, but needed them to help keep the patio dry. Only about 50' of gutters that needed two downspouts. Seamless aluminum with the two 3"x4" downspouts was $300 installed.
Quoted a little over $10,000 for gutters and dwnspouts. I laughed and he eventually came dwn to $7500 and threw in a free rain barrel. I refused. Thanks everyone here for all your info.
Installed on single story home $575, old gutters where taken down and hauled off as well. I thought that was a perfect price. Mike's Seamless in Farmer City, IL did the work. That was in 2010
Installed 124 linear feet of seamless aluminum gutter with (7) 3x4 aluminum downspouts (134 total feet) including removal of old gutters. Leaf Guard system installed on 124 linear feet of gutter.
Installed 148 linear feet of seamless gutter with (5) 3x4" aluminum downspouts (188 total feet)included removal of old vinyl gutter and fill old anchor holes. Used 1st Choice Home Improvements.
I had 207 ft of seamless aluminum gutters installed and 165 of downspouts installed on my home. The installer removed all the old materials, filled old anchor holes and actually replaced a section of wood rot.
Installed on a double wide mobile home. Half of the old gutters had already been removed and disposed of. Contractor installed 5" seamless gutters with hidden hangers and four new downspouts.

My Mom called to get an estimate from Gutter Guard she has a metal roof and could not get the system advertised on TV. So they sold her another version and she had to finance them to pay for them they left the old gutters on the property and did not install new down spouts in which the old ones do not match in color. Linear Feet of Gutters: 65
Material: Aluminium
In December of 2012, we hired a mobile home contractor, there was 65 linear feet to install rain gutters and four downspouts with elbows, screws, etc. Reading what we have above, we feel we were ripped of, granted it was Winter, however, it was during a dry period.
