Gravel consists of small stones varying from 0.1"-3" in diameter, but averaging about 0.5"-1.5". There are two types -- water-worn river gravel with smooth edges, and sharp-edged crushed rock gravel, which has been mechanically broken into small pieces. Gravel can be used as ground cover; as a base for roads, driveways, walkways or patios, or on its own as both base and surface material for paving projects.
Typical costs:
Prices vary depending on the size and type of gravel; whether it is bought by the bag or in 5-gallon amounts, or by the ton or the cubic yard (equivalent to 3'x3'x3'); if it is delivered to the project site or picked up by the customer; and location (gravel is heavy, and delivery fees increase for every mile it must be transported).
Small bags typically cost $2-$8 or more, depending on size, type and location; up to five gallons of gravel can cost $3-$9 or more. For example, Home Depot charges $3.90 for a 50-lb. bag of all-purpose gravel[1] . and Seffner Rock & Gravel[2] in Tampa, FL sells white or brown river rock in 3/8", 3/4" or 1.5" sizes for $5.65 for five gallons.
Bulk gravel can cost $6-$75 or more a ton if it is picked up or $15-$100 or more delivered, depending on distance delivered, location (how far the seller is from the gravel source) and the type of stone. Crushed rock, pea gravel and drain rock are a few of the least expensive types; decomposed granite, crushed granite, imported and other specialty/decorative gravels typically cost more. JMJ Landscape Supply Center[3] in Lynchburg, VA charges $65 a ton for 1/4"-1/2" brown pea stone and $99.50 a ton for 1/2" earth rose crushed stone; delivery within a 10-mile radius is $55 per trip.
A cubic yard of gravel (weighing roughly 1.2 to 1.7 tons) costs about $10-$90 or more if hauled away by the customer, or $20-$120 or more delivered. For example, at Edstrom Construction[4] in Rexburg, ID charges 3/4" road base gravel is $9.75 per cubic yard for 3/4" road base gravel or $16.80 delivered locally; decorative gravel is $21 a cubic yard or $28.05 delivered. The Rock Shop[5] in Durham, NC charges $36 per cubic yard of for driveway gravel and $89 per cubic yard for 1" decorative tan gravel; delivery requires a minimum of 2 cubic yards of material, and additional fees apply.
A gravel path can cost $100-$1,000 for do-it-yourself materials, or $300-$2,000 or more with professional installation.
Complete installation of a gravel driveway starts at roughly $0.75-$3 or more a square foot, or about $300-$1,000 for a 12'x25' single-car driveway, 4"-8" thick. Prices can double for a roadway-quality gravel driveway, or $450-$1,800 for 12'x25' and $11,000-$60,000 or more for a driveway 12' wide and a quarter-mile long.
What should be included:
When buying bulk gravel, it's typical to check in with the stone yard office, weigh the hauling vehicle, load the material, then weigh the vehicle again to calculate the cost. With delivery, the gravel may be deposited in one pile at the curb, or spread out along the planned driveway, depending on the terms of delivery.
Additional costs:
There may be a minimum fee, a minimum volume amount or separate retail pricing when buying do-it-yourself supplies from a large gravel operation. For example, Weidle Corporation[6] in Germantown, OH sells 3/8" round washed pea gravel for $8 a ton to commercial customers or $18 a cubic yard but has a U-Pick-Up retail price for pickup truck loads of $18 a cubic yard with an $18 minimum sale of $18 plus tax.
Discounts:
Gravel can cost less for extra-large bulk orders or repeat customers like construction companies or landscapers; prices are typically lower in more remote areas. For example, Icon Materials[7] in Washington discounts the cost to contractors with annual purchase volumes of 500 tons or more; at its Auburn, WA site the cost for washed pea gravel is $11.25 a ton retail or $10.25 for contractors; at its Seattle location the price is $15.35 a ton retail or $14.35 for contractors.
Shopping for gravel:
Gravel is available from home improvement centers like Home Depot[8] or Lowe's[9] ; from landscape and material supply companies; from sand and gravel dealers; and direct from the gravel plant/pit.

Julie has delivered twice to my home (single female) She is awesome, goes out of her way to help and place it EXACTLY where one needs. Her employee (John?) puts it where he wants to. He will argue with you, tell you he doesn't care where Julie placed hers, does not know how to dump anything but a big pile and tells you to get a tractor. He has been t my property twice with same attitude. I'd fire him...If you are a single female, I would NOT allow the man on my property as he will argue with you. I am not sure if he is the same with men but he obviously has a problem with women and customers in general.
Dropped where I wanted, up a very steep driveway. Loc was marked with orange flagging and drop was perfect. Only problem is a single truck w/ transfer load was only ~32 tons. Will be ordering more. 9/2015
